Welcome to the stout death match 2011.

One stout to rule them all: Founders Breakfast Stout

founders-breakfast-stout-pour.jpg

Rules:
1) Must 21+ to play
2) Drink both side by side and vote for the one you like
3) No voting from memory

Beers were selected and seeded based on BeerAdvocate ratings.

Contenders are organized into 4-beer brackets by flavor/style/whim:
Chocolate, Coffee, Oatmeal and Imperial/Russian.
(Note many of these fit more than 1 category, so I tried to spread the talent around evenly).

The plan is to do 1 match-up/week, and name a bracket champion in 3 weeks.
This should help keep things going, and keep things in budget.
Say if you aren't interested in the Oatmeal Stouts, you can skip that bracket and catch back up later.

Once they have all been completed, we'll run the bracket champions head-to-head in a battle for stout supremacy.

I object to no Brooklyn Chocolate Stout. I'm too lazy to look but are these imperials, Russians, straight stout, or any/all?

These are a mix of imperials, oatmeal and straight stouts.
And if the Founders can't be had, we can swap in Brooklyn.
I left a lot of good ones on the cutting room floor when fitting it to an 8-beer bracket, and skipping bombers.
We could easily do another round of 16 if we want to expand.

So brooklyn is OK but Young's is no good? Pff...

Samuel Smith needs to be here as well.

Okay then

How's this for a field of 16?

1 Founders Breakfast Stout
2 North Coast Old Rasputin Imp Stout
3 Rogue Brewery Chocolate Stout
4 Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout
5 Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout
7 Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout
6 Victory Storm King Imperial Stout
8 Southern Tier Mokah
9 Sierra Nevada Stout
10 Young's Double Chocolate Stout
11 Anderson Valley Oatmeal Stout
12 Stoudts Fat Dog Imperial Stout
13 Samuel Adams Cream Stout

If Brooklyn put as much effort into their stout as they did their IPA, then I'm sure it is terrible.
In the IPA challenge, the Brooklyn was my absolute least favorite.

As for the others, I have no clue. I am not well versed at stouts.
It'll be good to do this tournament. I'm sure I'll be expanding my beer palate.

This is much better.
(although I never even heard of Anderson Valley or North Coast)

Anybody seen the Founder's yet? :drooling:
And if so, where it be at? 😉

A guy that works at the Bourbon Street on 22 in cokesbury(?) told me there is a spot in easton that has it on TAP!!!! WTF?

And BTW.. the sweet 16 is much better. Good job.

Brooklyn doesn't actually add chocolate to it. Admittedly I have not had a Youngs in like 4-5 years I think.

Sam Smith? That was good when I was drinking Sam Adams. I hope it's gotten better since then.

JMO but 16 is a bit deep. A lot of these are heavy hitters, so buying a 6 of each could kill your participant pool.

Maybe this calls for a ride/taste test. Cost of admission a six pack. We could knock off several contests this way.

Okay, glad the round of 16 looks better. We'll go with this.
I'll re-bracket shortly.

I haven't had the Anderson Valley or North Coast either, but they're supposed to rock.
That's part of this game.

As for the Founders- yep, it's hitting shelves and selling out as we speak.
They ship until December, but you're going to have to track it down.
As soon as it's stocked, it sells.

Possible places up north:
Total Wine
Whole Foods
Shoprite Liquors
Linwood Wine Co

A stout tourney, in comparison to the IPAs, is much more complex.

On this list you have Imperial, coffee, chocolate, oatmeal and milk stouts.

It's impossible to compare, say, Southern Tier Mokah v. Great Divide Imperial...they have two entirely different flavor profiles.

This being said, I am willing to make this sacrifice for science.

Yup, this is one of the reasons I initially went with the round of 8 and steered clear of the bombers.

in this case...keep it simple....vote for the one you find to be more yummy.
