night riding

I always make sure to park in a lot without a gate. I may be lucky but no one's ever given our group any issues while out at night, including cops. Just be nice to people and people are usually nice back.

I rode my local trails after twerk yesterday and after finishing my second lap, I past the Ranger as I was heading for my turd lap. It was close to dusk at that point and knew I could only get one more lap in. The sign at the entrance says the park closes at dusk so I didn't want to push it. As I came out of the third lap past the parking lot, the Ranger was parked and just waived and followed me out. I think he knew I went back in and waited for me to come out to leave. My Cre lights are on their way and I hope I can use them at Mercer and my local trails. Chances are, I will "be nice" to the Ranger to see if he's kewl with me riding at night + it helps that I offer my assistance with trail clean up and maintenance.

shawneeboy, this topic is don't ask don't tell, PM the moderators, they know then hours of operation and other things

On another note saw a few at the Rock after work last evening, still plenty of light when I was leaving at 5, saw someone with an orange jersey going from blue to white, any of you?

I used to ride the Wissahickon a lot at night. Plenty of places to park. I don't think any of the lots are gated. While the park is technically closed, Philly police have other things to worry about than chasing mtn bikers at night. We used to see cops in the lots while gearing up all the time and they never paid notice to us. Or just park on a side street outside of the park. Forbidden Drive is open 24/7, so ride down that and take one of the off-shoots to single-track.

I don't think anyone is worried about the cops, they aren't going to stop you and no one really cares about tickets and if someone gets them.

The issue is with land use managers and advertising a taboo activity on a board that land use managers have used for ammo against cyclists in the past when said cyclists are pursuing additional land use or projects that need the said land managers approval.

Not naming names, but there are people who just head to the park and ride their bike and that is it. There is another set of people that do the bidding and volunteer work for the cycling community.

By advertising in an open space an activity that is forbidden to the cimmunity you are throwing a large middle finger to the land use managers, as well as those that work with them.

It has been awhile, but there have been issues in the past and park closures and or other handcuffs on the community have been threatened or acted upon.

Just saying.

I believe The Wiss is open until 2 am technically but yeah, never a problem.
As previously stated, Neshaminy is a great option as well.

The Wiss at 2am, would be a very scary place. MattyB, why is night riding illegal in NJ? My local parks are township (Ceres) and Township owned (CCC). Ceres is a back and forth thing with night riding but Gloucester Twp Park (ccc) is open until 10pm daily year round.

Most NJ parks close at dusk.

Well we don't have twp trails up here. State and county and they are dawn to dusk. It's the sad truth but these departments don't have the funding to police nor do they want to do a rescues after hours. It's logic especially how legalistic this state is.

I read some of the post about nite riding in allaire and theres a chopper hovering and tried to look for a couple of mtbikers riding there. Talk about township funding on a helicopter just to check allaire park at night.

You are supposed to go to work so you can pay taxes and buy goods. After work, proceed home and either watch conglomerate controlled media or go to the mall and buy goods. Do not venture outside or persue interests not focused on maintaining the above.

I think the copter was out there for other reasons and decided to toy with the bikers.....no way the state would use a copter to police night riding. However, I have heard from more than one Park Police officer I have spoken with that they enjoy busting us (I mean those) poor saps who are just trying to get a ride in.

Point is, and I'll say it again. Don't brag about it, don't park in the lot, be stealthy, and enjoy the ride. We could get all crazy about it and try to get it legalized but I think 1) it would take some of the fun out of it. 2) will likely not happen, and 3) only serve to draw more attention to ourselves.....in this case, let sleeping dogs lie (edit) and if you get busted it's your own fault for trespassing after hours.

^^^Makes more sense. Any idea what the fine is for riding at night in a state park? More than a Schawble tire?
