NNJ for Noobs

So I've typically avoided this section of the state by and large. I've ridden Sterling, Allamuchy once or twice. I actually do frequent DMP fairly regularly, and between there and CR, those are my favorite NJ trails. I'd like to start pushing myself a bit more with tech with Whistler on my horizon the end of the summer, so I am looking for recommendations. Stephen's seems appropriate, but I want to hear from you guys.

Agreed that Stephens is the next step in progression. DMP really doesn’t qualify as tech in the realm of NNJ, there are a couple really short segments, but it’s mostly XC and flow.

Stephens, Mahlon Dickerson, Allamuchy, Kittatiny Valley (also not much tech), Jungle Habitat… these are my local stomping grounds. If you want a tour, shoot me a message, I’d be happy to take you out to see what’s out there!

Training for the big W? You need to work on the steeper stuff, that and Rocky and rooty stuff. You want Rocky? Jungle, school side of ringwood and wayway has a bunch of stuff. The white or crossover in ringwood… descending that is not bad. If you can cross the Hutson, blue mountain and ninam will get you lots of rocks. You should spend some time in the bike parks. The creek is ok but it only has 700ft of vertical, the right side of kilington has some stuff…..

Agree with Ringwood, Jungle, Wayway, Mahlon, Allamuchy...Thats good undergrad work....I never thought of SSP having tech, but it does have some fun downhills.

Wildcat is like your masters...then after that, we can show you Fugawe when you want to get your PHD. 🙂

If you already ride CR then Sourlands is not too far away.

I just might take you up on that. Thank you for the offer!!!

Yea, I'm good with the going down part with that stuff, I just struggle with the up, mainly because of technique (power pedal stroke timing, step-ups, etc). I'm better with roots, but rocky ups I struggle with.

Also get some runs at Creek, are planning just singletrack or mixing in DH

Planning to do that as well. Got a 3 day pass setup, really want to get comfortable with flat-out speed, progress a bit in my drops/jumps. I'm not looking to dominate Whistler, just enjoy the experience. Same was my mentality last year for Moab, and that worked out great, rode everything but Portal.

Hahaha, went to Wildcat once, hated it!! Friend of my rides there almost every day. Guess I can hit a couple of his loops to get more comfortable.

This is the exact guidance I was looking for, everyone!! Thanks, and keep it coming!

Definitely try to hit up bike parks. None of the public NNJ parks are really steep or fast. If you're bringing your bike out to Whistler you'll want to make sure it's settled as far as brakes/suspension.

You don't want to get out there and find out you are cooking your brakes or struggling with arm pump. It's probably more similar to the WE or Falcon Flow if you road that out in Moab.

We should do a sitewide park tech poll. Could be interesting to give people an idea of progression of where to go one after another.

Another under the radar getting more technical park is Tourne. All the new trails they're building have moments of challenging terrain.

That's a really good idea I feel.

I've done Tourne a few times, can handle all that, but with some difficulty on the exposure trail overlooking WMA. That fire road climb goes on forever, too...
