Numb hands

I just started putting significant miles on my mtb. Well, significant for me compared to the distance of my rides in the past.

About 9 miles into my ride today my right hand went numb. Almost like it fell asleep. My left one was tingly but no where near as bad as the right. No pain just numbness.

I got off the bike and shook my hands out for a few mins and it was better. Then by the time I got back to the car it was starting again.

I know it wasnt due to the cold but probably a circulation issue.

could it be the placement of the ergons, my position on the bike, the new extended time I am spending on the bike?

All in all the ride was great today. 6MR nice and chilly and quick.

Thanks in advance.

Tingling means you're cutting off circulation or pressing a nerve somewhere. If you're wearing padded cycling gloves it will be less. Position the ergons so the pressure on your hands is even from palm to the grip. If you feel a specific pressure point, good chance that's your problem. Don't ride with a death grip and do move your hands around often. Shake 'em out when they tingle and don't wait for them to go numb.

If all else fails, check that your back is in alignment. A slightly pinched nerve in the neck/shoulder/upper back area can cause numbness in the hands because of the increased pressure of a riding position.

Are you wearing a Camelback, or something similar that runs under your arms? I had the same problem and fixed it by actually using the chest strappy thing instead of having my pack hang on my armpits... cuttin off the circulation. just a thought

my fingers get numb when i ride in the cold weather, but its more a circulation issue. After about 30 min. of riding i'm good, but i do have to shake my hands down to get blood flowing to fingers.

Your head may be tilted too far back. Try removing the visor from your helmet so you can see far ahead with less neck bend.

Poor core plain and simple, have had this issue time and time again. Put on a few lbs. and no core exercises guaranteed numbing sensation for me...I believe high sugar intake is also a cause but that's not scientific just my own experience...

I second Ergon grips and a good pair of cycling gloves. Also try a relaxing exercise we were told to do in my Motocross days.
Relax your face
Relax your neck and shoulder
Relax your arms and fingers
Continue relaxing all of your body parts till you get to your toes.
Ride without tensing up
Remember not to fall off your bike.😀

no camelback...just a water bottle...

This concept has peaked my interest. Core exercises may be on my morning agenda. Putting on a few lbs is an under statement for me. However, I am on the decline weight wise.

a good pair of cycling gloves.

Check
