Official: Ask Kevin what I should wear on my ride today

This is truth

3 hours at 28 degrees.

Assos Airjack---the BFG of winter jackets.

Lake 303's---just 3 degrees above their minimum

Shearling lined leather snowboard gloves.

45NRTH Nerd Wool hat

Only flaw was that the back of my hands took a while to warm up

Serious question: Any good winter flat pedal shoes out there? The high top Five10 Gore-tex version are not insulated, just waterproof.

what temps are you planning for? Like not the one time I rode in this temp, the average temp.
I find the hell cats to be responsible water resistant, they are not water proof by any means but if it is that wet I am typically not on the trails. I wear my down to around 30 with a woolie bookie before thinking about my winter boots . The impacts (or whatever replaced them) would likely add alittle more protection.

Anything below 40 and my feet freeze within 30 mins. Since picking up my shimano winter shoes (spd), I have been able to extend that to about an hour. I wear neoprene socks over wool socks from Fall to Spring. I want to fatbike in the snow and ride the winter using flat pedals. It’s better for my circulation and my feet don’t go numb as quickly.

You got a couple different things potentially going on, one could be that you were inhibiting circulation by packing your shoe with too much stuff. But it will make the assumption that you already figured that out. Honestly the waterproof Is half the battle if you want to stick with flats.

My recommendation would be is that you just stick with the SPD‘s since you already have a winter shoe, I know you want to be on flats but at the end of the day if we’re talking about a half an hour or an hour ride… Let’s be honest how rad are you going to get on the fat bike where you would really see the advantage of flat pedal shoes

#truth 🙂

90min Temps about 30 degrees

Sweat pants, regular 5 ten shoes, cotton socks, t shirt, puffy jacket unzipped, regular summer gloves, no hat... Bitched to me the entire time that he wanted his jacket off... I refused mainly because I had no place to carry it

Ah to be 7 again

I‘m a heavy sweater. When riding sub-freezing temps, I just need to decide whether I want to be cold at the very beginning of the ride or too hot for the rest of it. I don’t mind suffering a bit at the very start if I can avoid becoming a sweaty mess by the mid point. So, my gear is essentially just what I wear in the summer plus a full face, thin jacket with zip-off sleeves and winter gloves.

After 30 minutes, I’ll switch to my summer gloves and zip off the sleeves of the jacket so it's essentially a vest. The full face keeps my ears warm but vents enough to keep my noggin cool.

This is what I do, I dress so I'm a little chili in the lot. In 15 mins I'm nice and warm.

Also, I wear a wool beanie and winter boots that have lots of room for my toes to move around.

My Gore Tool jacket is reaching the end of its lifespan. Anyone have any suggestions for replacements.

I like the wind stopper and relative loose fit of the jacket, as well as it’s ability to unzip underarm panels for venting. I don’t like that it absorbs odors, something merino wool based would be great.
Thanks

There is no silver bullet here In terms of a single piece that has merino plus wind stopper plus the zipper features.

I personally have not have gore products absorb smell but maybe stop the potential for smell with a merino base layer?

This is very similar to the tool jacket in terms of the type of wind stopper and the insulation. I have this jacket and it is Excellent.

14 degrees this morning an attempted to use a thin fleece shirt and silk base layer under the 15 year old worn out PI soft shell.

Worked out awesome and riding home above freezing dropped the base layer, unzipped a bit and did not have the soaked sweating issue i would normally have. FTW

And by the way, this is awesom. I’ll take dark till 8am, for light at 530pm on Christmas Day.

My Michigan family on the other side of the timezone is now looking at dark until 9am....

It is also hard to sleep at 10:00 during the summer, when the sun is setting, but "they survive"

What the heck is ‘permanent DST’ ? Just coming up with yet another ‘US only’ measurement in order to further confuse foreign visitors? I guess since there’s no other pressing matter I’ll also ask for 32 hours days, I feel it would keep us all younger…
