For those who do podcasts, the Downtime podcast had an interview with the founder of 7Mesh, which I thought was pretty interesting as far as all of the considerations for building clothing for different applications.
I also think that the capabilities of all of the fancy water resistant fabrics are dramatically oversold, at least for higher exertion activities. I have a fancy Arc'Teryx shell and there have been a few times when that's been awesome. Skiing in the pouring rain all day...stayed nice and comfortable. Low intensity hiking (ie "walking"), also great. Anything higher effort and it's still going to feel like wearing a garbage bag after half an hour. I think you just have to accept either wearing stuff that's going to soak through or wearing stuff that's going to trap a lot of sweat. Glad that we don't live in an area where riding in those conditions is a fact of life.
