Post your BooBoo's

No cut or bruise on the kneecap? So crazy! I hope you heal up quickly. Take calcium and vitamin D supplements for faster recovery.
Thanks for those tips.

If anyone recalls the 6 mile run ride we did at Nassau I think last summer and it was 105 degrees out, the big topic became knee pads. I bought G form pros and I am 99.9% sure that prevented me from shattering it today. It’s bruised and swollen but no cut on either knee. Time to get some shin guards tho I guess

Soooo here's the scoop from my adventures in MTB riding today:

Lap 1 about 2 miles in pedal strike on a rock kicked me off the trail and into some bushes for a soft landing but the bike and something else nailed me in the shins Doesnt seem to be the pedals as I didnt have the well known Pin Shin burger marks. Left leg looked worse than it was. right leg is small cut but a small knot. After a shower it looked much better but for the rest of the race it had some good knar factor to it when everyone saw me. Thanks to our race medic Sean for checking on me each lap.

2nd lap about halfway down white i clipped an off camber log and went straight down on my left knee OTB. Bike did the scorpion thing and flopped right onto a rock on the rear der and smashed it into the spokes. broke my RoadID off my wrist (silicon band snapped) dusted myself off and while the knee hurt, it wasnt more than any other time thanks mostly to my Goretex knee pads.

Spent 10 minutes yanking and twisting the rear der and remembered I had a multitool in my pack. then I spent 5 minutes looking for my clear glasses and lucky for me one of the volunteers came by and checked on my and he stopped his bike next to a tree and the glasses were right by his foot. Somehow i was able to make it work and it shifted fine the remaining 1.5 laps even tho it looked all wonky.

Post ride down to the shop, walking, standing, sitting, food, awards all felt fine. walked to go get my car and the knee felt like it was swelling. By the time I drove home i could barely put weight on it. Figure I would shower and ice it. got dressed and realized its something more. Drove myself to urgent care (mistake) after i called to make sure they had xray. they took me in within 5 minutes except now I am in a wheelchair because I cant even walk. Xray was torture trying to position my knee on the table. 3 motrin kicked in within 30 minutes took the edge off.

Diagnosis - fractured left Patella. Radiologists notes state its "subtle.." and I can see its not smashed or all the way through. Dr. google says if no surgery needed and its minor then the recovery should be a few weeks and not 6-8 weeks if I need surgery. will be up first thing tmw to go to orthopedist hoping they can get me in. Wife had to come get me but lucky my 16 year old is about to get his license in 2 weeks so he was able to drive my car home with me in it.

So thats the end of my riding season but I am not sorry I went for it, I wanted the challenge and got a little more than I bargained for. I see its going to be an annual event so I will plan for it again, just maybe not in the rain.

Crazy. Hope you heal up quickly.

After @iman29 earlier on lap 1 I had a good fall on a tight turn on Marty’s. After my slow man action of standing up from my skid he told me about his as he passed me… now I feel my bruise doesnt even compare now.

Hoping for option #1!

Current situation.

Totally shocked I woke up pretty much pain free this morning. Iced it on and off while watching Netflix for 3 hours last night /early this morning. Slept OK with the brace all things considered. Much less swollen today too.

Where yesterday it was probably 8 out of 10 just trying to move around today it doesn’t hurt at all. I tested putting my left foot down a bit and also no pain.

Feeling somewhat optimistic that my level of injury is the most mild one of the 10+ different levels. Seeing Ortho doc tmw at 1pm.

For now sticking to the strict protocol from
The urgent care until doc tells me different so at least in my head I didn’t do anything to make it worse.

TBC….

If you’re gonna be dumb, you’d better be tough. 😜
And you had knee pads on? Jeez think about the damage without.
Heal up soon!
Thanks.

Yup I’m pretty sure would have shattered it if I wasn’t wearing the knee pads and be in much worse shape.

Dr visit today will see what he says.

TL;DR version : No surgery. TBC via and MRI if any fracture or other issues. MRI tmw. Back to doc on Thursday.

Other version :

No surgery necessary. While the doc did say there could be a hairline fracture he said the urgent care was incorrect and he’s sending me for an MRI tmw to look into two different spots on the back of the patella seen below.

He also wants to rule out any small unseen damage to the tops of the tib/fib and cartledge. He’s not concerned about any ACL/MCL issues because I would have heard a pop and I would be more swollen and in much more pain. He was even surprised during the exam when he was manipulating my knee and patella nothing hurt.

For now he wants to play it safe and stay in the immobilizer. If the patella is not fractured I can switch to a knee brace and walk around and he offered to drain the knee to improve the range of motion sooner. If it’s the patella then no sense to drain it since need to stay in the immobilizer another week but then I can lose the crutches.

So bottom line is it doesn’t seem to be anything too serious and better news is I am allowed to drive.

For 3 seconds of humor my wife was holding my crutches and they are pretty much as tall as she is but she did not approve a picture. 🤪🤣
