prevent hitch rack rust?

Rusting on bolts and a little on some parts seem to be common on hitch racks. What precautions, if any, can I do to prevent from future rusting and keep it looking fresh? spray something on? brush something on?

Crawl under you car and see how many rusted bolts there is.😀 I say dont really worry about it. But if you must, just put some type of grease on them.

Change them out with stainless, throw Never-Sieze on it. Don't use the Home Depot or Lowes crap. Get some good 316, 309 at a minimum.

To prevent rust on 'new' fasteners, you can top-coat them with paint, lacquer or even clear nail polish. Once they're rusted, I usually just grease them, or liberally coat them with copper anti-seize, or replace with stainless. The copper stuff eventually hardens to a rust protective coating.

i know they do sell some good anti-rust stuff at most boat supply stores.at one point i bought some stuff to spray my trolling motor down on my bay boat..[everything corrodes out in the saltwater]the stuff worked awesome but was definitely alittle to sticky.. id say check out a store like that...
ur guess is as good as mine...just an idea

and yes id have to agree stainless is the way to go.. for sure

The rust is just from the exposed metal pieces. A section probably chipped when putting the rack on or off.

In the Rover world, Waxoyl is a big thing for protecting from rust:

But it's a little on the messy side. For my truck I used POR-15 then Chassis Black over that. My towing hook/bumper I had blasted and then powder coated.

But a quick and easier way would sand the rusty parts down and then use a chassis paint or a few coats of Rustoleum rattle can paint.

Stainless bolts won't rust but they may not have as much strength as a class 10.9 or 8 bolt. I think McMaster Carr sells strong stainless bolts - they'll be a little more expensive. I don't think you can tell the rating but like panhead said get a good 316 grade.

Like 1-pc crank - I'd use copper grease on the threads. That stuff is great and I'm almost certain it's the same stuff as the Ti prep that I get in small packages with cranks. It's like liquid gold in the Rover circles and that's says a lot.

old thread but when I installed mine I sprayed all the holes i had to drill and bolts with spray on underbody coating, its sticky as hell and seems to be holding up well.

I wouldnt spray it in any of the moving bits but putting motor oil on something that will end up in the sewers doesnt sound too responsible 🙁
