Returning roadie diversifies...

After a 10-year layoff from bikes due to a golf addiction, I got back in the saddle in the winter of 2009 and started in earnest again this past spring. I'm a long time roadie/ex-racer that pedals for fun (sub-50 mile fast training rides). I started riding the Marty's Morristown shop ride and fell into a group of guys near my house.

They got me back into the woods - they on mtb bikes and me on my cross bike. I forgot how much fun the woods can be, as my last mtb was a Bridgestone MB-3 steel rigid with a Softride suspension stem (I'm dating myself for sure).

So I just added a Trek Fuel EX 8 to my bike collection (road, cross, fixed/ss, touring and now mtb) and looking forward to some trail riding. The snow and frigid cold have kept me off the bike, but I just put some Nokian studded tires and will try to get out this weekend.

Pardon me if I ask some real newbie questions later on, as I don't know many of the trails here (used to ride in Long Island) and all the technology (disc brakes, suspension) is very new (I do my own wrenching mostly). Hope to see some of you on the trail or road.

Cheers..John 😀

wicked fun, but far south and nary a rock:
six mile

that should keep you plenty busy.

Welcome roadie, most of the guys on here ride the road as well. When the weather gets nicer there are group mtb rides to join in.

Thanks Bonefish for the low-down on the trails. I live near the Tourne and ride my cross bike there from time to time (well half ride, half carry). My mtb skills are rusty (and were nothing to brag about ever) and looking forward to riding my first suspension bike (which helps the old bones too).

No problem. I grew up riding the tourne. It's a great little park but not a destination by any means. If you're in the area, wildcat ridge in Rockaway offers TONS of great riding. A wee more technical than the torn and MUCH bigger.

Forgot to mention that in my first post.

Enjoy the full squish. Maybe sometime in the next two months the trails will actually have some dirt on 'em. For now, we're pretty much all roadies...

Welcome aboard as most have said this time of year we are all roadies somewhat... 🙂

True..I just finished switching the components from Specialized Langster (fixed/ss) to a cross version (All City) with studded road tires. So I have studs for off- and on-road. Does that make me studly?😱😛

So if anyone's looking for a fixed gear/ss frameset, I plan to sell it. The simple drivetrain makes it much easier to clean after a ride.

Welcome! When riding the Tourne say Hi to Caren and Mike on the blue Ventana MTB tandem. Good friends of ours. We hope to see ya on the trails.
