Roadies

I would agree with the third option as well...

I started riding this fall and bought a SS 29er. I totally got hooked and started exploring what I could use as a road bike and still ride the canal or six mile or some other trails. So I bought a cdale Super X cross bike. Then I put road tires on the Super X and did a few group rides and I was totally hooked on the road riding. And now I have a SuperSix due in any day now! The SuperX is an awesome all around bike. My reason for going to a dedicated road bike is that I have committed to doing my first tri this year; and as I felt that the SuperX would be very versatile. I also felt the SuperSix would be more versatile than a true TT bike. I will have a stable full of cdales and could not be happier.

sometimes i became roadies but most of the time, fulltime mtbiker.

here's photo from yesterday rides.

getting a road bike changed the way i looked at riding on the road. for me it was a necessary evil if i wanted to have any lungs/legs in the woods. now, like vreeland, i would say about 80% of my miles are on the road, if not more. the convenience is too much to pass.

I also have a road bike but I don't ride all that often. I'll take it out on the weekends and just do a 24-mile loop. I like to take it to LBI when I'm there and circle the island.... actually it's more of an out and back from end to end. It gets a bit challenging south of the bridge but real smooth north of it.

looks like a good day for a ride today, just gotta make sure my pothole awareness is sharp

Just put in a nice 20 on the CX with road tires.

I think if you're wanting to do any races the road is a must.

If you're just looking for having a blast on the bike stick to the woods. Just good luck keeping up with the guys that do both.

I use a CX bike for road rides as well... I put a pair of Maxxis High Rollers on them in the middle of Dec... The goal is to wear out the the rear tire till its bald by the end of March... Thats how much work it has been getting with this weather... Jake says 80% but for me in January the road was 100%

still in the hills? what's a kalmyk?

Ironically the story of our culture will be presented at Rutgers Folk Festival this year on April 30th... I am 50/50 or what is called Balduh... Yup on S. Riverside.. A large community of us are in Howell as well as 3 of our Buddhist Temples...

gets me everytime. I can put in a three hour ride in the time i would drive to the trails to ride for and hour and a half. Also, with the cross bike, you can mix dirt and road, even with road tires. This snow has put been rough as some of my dirt cut throughs have been covered in snow.

Agreed on the convenience factor.

I had been riding an old MTB on the road for the last few years, but to me, riding a mountain bike on the road is like jogging in workboots, so I would generally opt for driving to the trails, being gone for several hours (I have three young-ish kids - didn't always go over that well). Finally got a proper road bike a few weeks back and am really enjoying road riding, albeit the weather has been prohibitive. I'm only gone for a 2-3 hours, the roads around me are great, wife's happy, and it will ultimately (hopefully) help my MTB speed.

I'm a grown up BMX kid, so I will always enjoy off road more, but having the road option is nice.
