I would agree with the third option as well...
I started riding this fall and bought a SS 29er. I totally got hooked and started exploring what I could use as a road bike and still ride the canal or six mile or some other trails. So I bought a cdale Super X cross bike. Then I put road tires on the Super X and did a few group rides and I was totally hooked on the road riding. And now I have a SuperSix due in any day now! The SuperX is an awesome all around bike. My reason for going to a dedicated road bike is that I have committed to doing my first tri this year; and as I felt that the SuperX would be very versatile. I also felt the SuperSix would be more versatile than a true TT bike. I will have a stable full of cdales and could not be happier.
