Round Valley Conditions

rode full loop from state park parking area...place was empty on a friday afternoon!
conditions were great, although much more beat up then the last time I rode here..............in 1996😀

Good conditions today at noon, even with the rain. some soft spots on the ridge trail but not bad, and some puddles on the fire road.

seemed like more loose rock than usual - perhaps from the xterra last weekend?

Perfect this morning.
Sunny, breezy, cool, tacky.
Rocky...

Nice clean pic 100 yds out of the lot!

anyway, it was wet today - because of the rain (einstein would be proud). but it wasn't muddy, and the rocks were not slippery. was starting to do more than drizzle as we finished up.

rode from the cush lot and jumped on white along the ridge (between arrows on pic) - haven't been on there since the tree tagging trip - it needs some serious tlc to clear the trees out (woody can use his new chainsaw cert - congrats on that!) - there is also a nasty hanger on yellow on the HCP land. and a new downed small caliper (6") tree going up just out of the boy scout camp - couldn't pull it down cause it is caught in a grape vine.

also, some signage to the link white back to red around that nice big multi-logover would be good...found an old trail marked by cairns, so followed that a couple hundred yards...

Rode Round Valley today out of the Cushetunk Lot. I got about as far as the top of "Puke Hill" (a relatively short out-and-back). The trails were tacky, but not muddy (except in a couple of small places). The roots and rocks were a little slippery, but all-in-all, that section of Round Valley is very rideable despite the daily rain that's fallen recently.

Was that you wearing the mosquito suit? If so, smart man, I got hit real bad on the cushetunk climb.

The trail was in good shape considering all the rain we've had recently. It's a bit overgrown in spots, but what trail isn't these days?

Yes, I guess that was me, DC. Those are actually "sunsleeves" that I wear -- they have an SPF factor built into the fabric, and they evaporate perspiration very well, except when there's no breeze (like today). They protect against mosquitoes, but I also like them because I can see ticks better on the white fabric.

And, yes, with all the rain we've gotten, I can't complain about the trail conditions or the relatively small amount of overgrowth we have...

Just got back from Round Valley. Despite the rain yesterday, the part I did (coming in from the Cushetunk Lot) was nearly mud-free. The trails were still damp, however, making the rocks and roots slippery -- and the climbing more unpredictable.

I imagine that it will continue to dry in the next day or so, but using a little more caution in the meantime is probably a good idea.

The switchback section by the dam is super overgrown, so bad that I took the fence line option on the way back to Cushetunk the other day. Another problem area is the fire road leading up to Puke Hill, it is rutted out due to all the rainfall we've had. The hills are annoying as well, there are way too many of them and they are too long.

Isn't that why we ride RV in the first place?? lol. Awhile ago I rode there and yes, the switchback was overgrown and had Sandy damage still, so there was hike-a-bike. I didn't know the fenceline was still open? Fire road to Puke is almost always rutted. But- rode from Cushetunk to base of Puke and back a few weeks ago and trails were super fine.

I like to ride from the backside of rv that last climb to the ridge is crazy , I have made it up 10 ft past the trail on the left but never could make it to the top.does anybody know of anyone that has made that climb non stop from the lot ? It almost seems superhuman to me

Just got back - started at South lot and took red trail most of the way around. Beginning of red is really washed out, but similar to other parts of the trail. There was one tree down - looks like ~ 4 miles in based on garmin file. It's low enough to ride over and has been trampled down by hikers but it's covered in thick vines that will catch your pedal (like what happened to me) and result in sudden unassisted forward dismount.

gravity seemed higher than normal, but the conditions were perfect!

getting some overgrowth on the trails, cause you all aren't riding it enough.

the last connector trail on puke hill to the campground road has a tree down across it. small enough for a hand saw if someone goes through.

Major step in the right direction for future Round Valley trail maintenance efforts!

Thank you JORBA for the new arsenal of tools and everything else you do to support Mountain Biking in NJ!!
