Smokey & the Bandit Extended Online Race

a second misfit?

Not for this one, but I will be replacing my current frame in the next year or two -- I've beaten that bike to crap and it still comes back for more. I don't envision a time when I won't have a Misfit as my primary SS.

For this one, though, I wanted something that was more off the shelf, both to save a little money and to save my sanity. Anytime I do a full build like I would do with the Misfit, I agonize over pretty much every single component (ironically, most of the choices I made on that build have long since been replaced on the fly.) I spent a week mulling over which material to use for the spokes on the wheels I built for my Misfit. This time, I wanted to just walk into the shop, pick a rig, and then come back and pick it up when it's ready. I was leaning toward a Niner One-9, but I'm going to go with a SIR-9. I've never been big on steel, but for the more forgiving ride quality I wanted for the back-up, this was the way to go. I was a little nervous about the eccentric BB, but from what I've heard the new two-bolt system solves a lot of the torque issues, and if I have to have an eccentric, I'd rather it not be the hub (I will never own another ENO hub as long as I live.)

More off the shelf than an off the shelf Misfit model? :hmmm:

There's no such thing as an off the shelf Misfit really -- you have to build it up even if you buy all the components from Misfit directly. (And that's half the fun!) Except last time I did it, I think I ended up buying and re-buying several components. That build took my all winter of 2009. I went through four different bars until I had the "right" ones, rebuilt the wheels twice before I ever rode them, and spent a good month debating with myself as to whether or not I wanted mechanical discs for simplicity of adjustments or hydraulics for stopping power (I ultimately went with simplicity of adjustments because - hey, why would I want to stop anyway?) So even though you can technically get the entire build kit from Peter, you are still building it yourself and for me that meant I started swapping parts as soon as they were delivered. On this one, I walked into the shop and said, "I want a back up SS that has a more forgiving ride but still a 'racy' geometry and I want to spend about X -- what are my options and when can I have it?" (My shop loves dealing with me for this kind of stuff. I only agonize over things when I'm doing it myself. When I deal with him, I put myself in his hands and just trust he won't screw me. I've never been steered wrong by him and this will be the third bike I've bought from him in the last couple of years -- my road, my CX and now the SS -- and it's the fourth if you count my wife's road bike.) I figure this is going to be a good rig for longer non-race rides, like when I go to Rattling Creek or Michaux or Rothrock and want to just f*ck around on the rocks all day.

Custom build no doubt, but the frame is off the shelf, nothing custom about it. Everyone who has one has the same frame. This is what I was referring to. Even for stock complete bikes, very few of us have done nothing to customize it.

Oh, I get you. Yeah, that's true. I've never had a complete custom frame built, so I think more of the build when I say "off the shelf". What I meant here is that I didn't make the decisions on this one because I agonize over each one and then change it half a million times over the life of the bike anyway.

Way off where I was last year at my best but I did get my first KOM of the season.

Damn nice day out there. Feels like it's getting chilly out now. Oh well it will warm up again soon enough.

feeling the same way Tim - sat at my desk working, went to go out, and it was cold! well, cool/damp/no sun - and wind, some rain.

anyway, i'm waiving my no lame rides rule because of a flat today - got the flat taking tie 4th place on the hill in front of my house - the elevation is wrong, so it is a hidden segment, but it is still a decent steep (blew myself up, suspect the others were just cat 1 pace line....) (edit - they recently fixed the elevation)

Finished up the bookwork to get the taxes done, so dropped them off.
