very little taste - not bitter, which i read is the go-bad mode,
i gotta cook it with something. seems like it will absorb moisture,

I felt the same. I heard treat it like tofu, so I tried fried rice and still meh. But with the last batch I pickled it and it's the bomb, even texture.

harvesting really small ones must be the key. I saw some beautiful boletes in allamuchy last week, if I go back this week I might grab some

Not sure if you read it right, but I pickLed them .. not picked. Well, I picked then pickled them. Not sure size would make a difference. Anyways, the puffballs I picked were super fresh. With half I made fried rice, meh. With half I made pickled puffballs.
