The DIY thread - DIYourself

I need another opinion on drywall finishing. Would you rather have a lot of taper joints, or less joints all together but they're 50/50 butt and taper?

I'm using paperless drywall and I can only get 4x8 sheets.Trying to decide how to lay them out (horizontal or vertical). Horizontal gives me less joints but a lot of them will be butts. This is going to suck!

go with horizontal and staggered butts - assuming you use pre-mix spackle, add some water, mix it with a paddle on a drill. go thin, use a sponge to smooth it rather than sand.

are you gluing too?
i don't like putting nails/screwes in the valley, they pull out or through

Such rookie advice
I have stayed out of here because I like to see weekend hero's get it done! Horizontal and hire a good taper...

Thanks for all of the advice. Rich I'll definitely use that lift. I don't have a ton of ceiling work but there's enough...

No plan to glue, I'm just going to screw it and get on with life. I've been going back and forth on whether or not to have someone do the drywall & taping. However I don't want to spend a good chunk of budget on something I know I can do, regardless of the time commitment. My one drywall job last year came out pretty good for a first timer. Also I learned a lot which I can apply here. Time to get dusty. After vacation that is!

i tried to use the rapid set powder spackle a few rooms ago - humbled!

hired a guy for the kitchen, he was 6'5" - didn't need stilts!

Finishing up a DIY tonight - pics coming.

Is there a reason that the ceiling above my bathtub and shower is dropped down like 8" vs the rest of the bathroom ceiling? Maybe something with steam? I went up to the attic but i don't see any reason. Redoing the bathtub area so I may bring it back up flush. Also plans to install a fan.

house built in mid 60s.

In your case Value Engineering. Saves 10 square feet of tile @4.50 per sq/ft x 2 bathes average per home = $90.00 X how many houses per year.

The Pantry
The kitchen project is coming to a close, and after a few tweaks, there was some cherry left - the 12" is veneered plywood, the rest is solid.
Decided on shelf pins - so set up the jig and drilled some holes. Came up short with 6" wood, so did some simple joinery - 3" using biscuits and glue.
Where the connections could be hidden, pulled out the pocket jig - used some of the trim pieces too. Still short one 12" piece, but i'll find it. (if i don't, i'll
be joining 4 individual 3" pieces. pantry is about 40"x38, with an angled edge.

Looks good, and great use of scraps. I like the "coming to a close" stage but sometimes that final punch list takes as long as the main project.

Painted a ceiling today.

"So What?" you ask.

it was on the honeydo list. No further explanation necessary.

Any body familiar with installing claw foot tubs? I have a 60" long area to install a 54" long tub. debating between floor suppky lines or wal supply lines. the old lines are in the wall 8" apart and the wall is down. Also the tub has been removed and its subfloor now that I will tile.

Any and everyone I have ever seen comes from the floor, it's part of the style. Go look at any images.

On Sunday afternoon into Monday we had a few small water spots develop in the ceiling of our spare bedroom (soon to be nursery). I'm sure its from ice damning/melt water as it never has happened before from heavy rain.

I'm assuming things will dry out since its an isolated thing. Their is a faint odor, smells like spackle/wet sheetrock. I'm in a top level condo, so there really isn't anything I can do as far as repairs go. Is there anything to be concerned about (mold?)
