The DIY thread - DIYourself

while this is a good idea in theory, im pretty sure this is not available in NJ anymore, at least i havent seen it at any of the pumps in over 10 years.

instead i put ethanolshield in the can before filling up, so far so good.

depends on you capable you are at adjusting them, not that the OEM one guarantees perfect adjustments. I usually buy the cheapo ones for myself but if i work on someone elses machine ill buy the nicer one to avoid the chinesium problems.
I keep forgetting that. Not sure why it's not available, at least maybe there's some available more near farm country?

It's not available everywhere here either, but a few gas stations have it.

I grab it when it goes on sale at Lowe's or HD. yes it is expensive.
oh wait, I have battery equipment now 😉

Aviation fuel is an option - esp for chainsaws.

Never had to deal with a carburetor before, how difficult is to clean the carburetor on a Tecumseh 8.0 hp snowblower motor? Yesterday I spilled more gas than I actually used, not to mention the random stalling out at the worst possible time...
It may depend on how old it is. I have a lawnmower I bought... 15 years ago - maybe 20? ...and every few years it doesn't want to start, so I take the carb off, take it apart, clean gunk out of it with carb cleaner and put it back together and back on the mower. Really basic - no rebuild kit or gaskets or anything - just some cleaning. Then it will start on the first pull.

I don't buy anything special as far as gas goes although I do put a few ounces of Stabil into the 2.5 gal can prior to each fill up. I'll fill the can every year and a half or so. Non-ethanol gas isn't available near me, so it just gets regular gas.

Bear in mind, that is the ONLY service that mower ever gets. Ever. Each Spring, it's a bit cantankerous about starting but then it starts reasonably easy for the rest of the year, typically mowing once a week or so. Still on the original spark plug as far as I can remember. I have pondered getting a new battery mower, but it's hard to justify when the old one just keeps working with minimal fuss.

The El cheapo one that I put on my mower has been fine for years. Of course now I jinxed it.
I have a 6hp tecumseh. I bought a $25 dollar one one Amazon. It works great. Came with a bunch of extra stuff. New fuel line, spark plug, ect....

I like to think I would be capable but I just don't have the time nor inclination any more. El Cheapo it is then...

Pretty sure nj law requires some sort of ethanol (I'd be thrilled to be proved wrong on this) but even working in South Jersey bumbleland I don't see any real gas anymore. Maybe if you cross the border to Pa or ny but who has time for that?

I work on small engines on the side. I end up buying an Amazon/ebay one for $20 most times since cleaning the carb is kinda hit or miss IMHO.

Based on this I would lean towards the real one but it's your time and your money
Amazon took my money already, I'll have to live with it...

Also, I'm considering buying the snow plow attachment for my John Deere lawn mower. Considering the very likely chances that if I go through with the purchase NJ will experience a uninterrupted summer until 2075, is anyone willing to chip in to what seems to be a very expensive bill?

plow or snow blower?
you will be very disappointed with the plow - it needs wheel weights and chains - and then it can only plow 6" of snow,
so you do the edges in the middle of a storm, then push the middle out to the edge, then do the edge again.

Better off getting a dedicated snow blower - and run the carb dry after each use. IMHO of course
(I had the plow attachment for my old garden tractor - that was my experience)

Now, I have an F911 that takes a 72" snow blower attachment - if I ever see one on the equipment surplus sale....

Just get a bike box and ….

I already have the blower, hence the need to replace its carburetor...you seem to fail to realize that I do not think or act applying any rational criteria.

BTW, only 6" is not going to do it...
