The Heckle Report

Just broke my Nalgene. She was only 4 months old when I dropped her full of water approximately 22 inches to the cement slab floor below. Rest in peace..

Call them. plastic should NOT break like that unless the process has been skewed. im sure you are not the only one. they should have reports of drop test results in their quality dept files. most companies will have a few different angles at which they drop. a 45* angle would be a standard drop. im sure they would be willing to compensate you if you are a good fluffer in email form.

@Delish I'm really just hoping they clean themselves at this point. I'm trying to Viking this but it's easier said than done.

perfect execution! after the uproar of BPA's in plastic drinking bottles, Nalgene almost went out of business and since have struggled with the quality of products. my Nalgene is about 10 years old. im still alive!

So I understand they replace the BPA with a similar agent that serves the same purpose. I'm sure it's probably "as bad for you" as the high test stuff.

In other news Blue is back ordered so I got my option of any other color or waiting a month, so I chose safety yellow which is discontinued SO I'M GETTING GLOW IN THE DARK. Talk about a win @stb222

Testing of polycarbonate products showed NO leaching of BPA under extreme conditions. At the other end of the spectrum, testing of Tritan which is BPA free has shown leaching of estrogenic chemicals in a cell-based assay.

at the end of the day... use a stainless steel container- preferably insulated

BPA alternative is called Cyclobutanediol

Carbon Rim Repair
Did you guys know there is a local carbon repair business? Swamp Ghost Frame Works is located right near the Great Swamp in Long Hill.

Tom contacted me a few months ago for a consult on a non-cycling project he was working on. When it came glue time and I was looking at my rim I cracked last year I gave Tom a ring and he showed me a little of what he does over at his shop. Nothing like a good 'ol barter!

Before:

You can see the impact point on the would be brake track. The strip that extends to the inside of the rim was me having had a few beers post race picking at shtit I shouldn't have been. When tapping on and around the break area you could hear a dead dampened sound at the impact point.

Tom sanded down around the patch area, mixed up some epoxy and applied the patch. He also put a small patch on the tire surface. We wrapped her up and let it set overnight. Of course that is a brief summary but I don't wanna give up exactly what the guy does. I can say he is very methodical and organized in his work. I was very impressed with the quality his work ethic and layout of his shop.

After:

I took the wheel home unfinished and sanded it out myself. This is not the standard procedure for the shop and I definitely could have put more time into it, but it's a race wheel and I needed to also glue last night. The patch has firmed up the area, tapping the area sounds crisp and live again. Visually I'm very happy with the results.

I've seen about a dozen of Tom's repairs in my few trips to his shop and am very impressed with the quality of the finish work. His prices are very reasonable and he tries to keep the turn around below 10 days. He says he has some clients that crash in a race one weekend and have their bike back for the next. Pretty good turn around!

As you can see I also did get the tire on. Mastic on carbon was as easy as Conti Al on Al rims. 2 coats on the rim, 3 on the tire and one more slop coat on the rim for tire mounting. This is the same procedure I've been using on my aluminum rims for two years with great results. I had plenty of time to set the tire and was not putting glue off of the rim while centering the base tape. I got the tire on straighter than normal. Thanks for the advise team MTBNJCXGLUECREW.

As for bond strength I will report back as late as the end of the season and as early as tonight.

Damn dude, that's a high caliper spreadsheet. I'm gonna file that in the schedule time.
