The Indoor Cyclist's support thread

I have been trying to do more Zwift workouts instead of JRA. But so far matching watts and varying cadences is like patting you head and rubbing your belly....

I might be misunderstanding the comment but if you are noting that a frenetic workout requires too much shifting and power changes. You can eliminate all cadence changes and shifting by putting your smart trainer into ERG mode. Selecting a workout with longer duration blocks that are not extreme in their differences will be much smoother as well. If that is what you are looking for.

I typically do an SST workout in ERG mode or without ERG try a pacer ride ( flattest course to reduce chaos )

Trainer difficulty defaults to 50% which is good to make climbs less of a disruption.

Krink’s Bedminster Route in Rouvy. Definitely cool to ride roads you know. I’m kinda leaning back to Zwift as an overall experience. Riding with people and talking smack in the chat makes rides go by a lot quicker even if the worlds are cheesy Mario cart worlds.

Do these workouts actually differ that much from Zwift's? The time and watt sequences see similar to the couple I have done in Zwift only. JW if it would actually be worth it.

The workouts themselves? Not really, no. There's only so many formats to really hit your zones... They all have the staples. Over unders, endurance/z2, sweet spot, vo2 Max work.

The new AI they've just rolled out is pretty damn good about progressively overloading your workouts though, the last month of training has been pretty fantastic about recommending workouts that are very challenging but do-able. It's pretty much a set it and forget it training plan if you can get past their new AI FTP metric which is kinda ftp but not really ftp.

Really depends on your goals, if you want to get faster I'm not sure there's better value for your money out there.

Couldn't agree more.
AI is constantly looking at your activities and adjusting workouts on the fly.
I think it's worth the extra monthly fee.
I can also see how just riding Zwift was hurting my fitness. Every ride was a hard ride.

I thought the whole new AI thing was maybe BS but I've been pretty surprised by the workouts. They seem to nail pretty well what I think I could do on that day. And they really make it apparent not to go hard the next day with the planned yellow or red days.

I'm wondering if I'll stick with it though since winter seems like it's fading into spring and I want to ride outdoors.

When I started I only entered Monkey Knife as my A event. With Improve gravel climbing.

Will switch to Xc training after April 11th

I also hated using the TR app. Following the blue line was so lame.

So my concern with paying for both is, once the weather improves, I will get outside 2-4x a week and not use it. I may try it up until we go to KT

At your stage of biking development you're going to get the most gains from a) riding as much as you can and b) riding a lot of SST. One of the biggest problems I have seen over the years is newer riders trying to jump in the training game and going right to VO2max intervals.

You need a foundation. That takes years for most people.

The only thing I don’t like about the suggestions Zwift makes is that it doesn’t add in outdoor rides to build its profile of you. And it also doesn’t talk to Rouvy, so you really have to go all in with one platform that draws from everything.

Overreaching? Zwift, you have no idea what I’m capable of 😂

The added this feature in last year - you have to resync your Garmin/Wahoo/Karoo account with Zwift to get it running.

That being said I have just only started to pay attention to the newest feature on recommended workouts so will see if it makes any sense.

I'd agree with this. Last year I had a professional training coach for 6 months leading into the Cancer charity ride (first time ever having a cycling coach) and the majority of his training plan was endurance and SST intervals with some occasional Z4+ type efforts. Most of the time the workouts were very doable when I felt like I should/could be doing more.

Even with my 15+ years of riding experience and a pretty solid foundation, I could feel and see the difference it made when it came time to do the longer training rides of 4-5 hours with lots of hills - i had plenty left in the tank most times.

Im doing my best to mimic some of the plan and workouts he gave me to prep for MKF even if this will be a one day event compared to the event last year which was 3 days.

It shows up but it doesn’t seem to count it towards anything other than XP and weekly mileage. That week it suggested that 4-hour century on Saturday because it didn’t think a 410 mile ride was good enough. This week I do a 177 mile ride and it’s like woah buddy, hold on 😂
