Things that make you frown :(

Here we go again… 😒.

This year tick season looks especially promising, not in a good way. The ones I found on the dog seem to have developed resistance to the tick and flea medication we religiously apply (they used to die as soon as they latched, I found one that had already started to fill up with blood and two that were 'empty' but still alive. Also found two on me but they never latched on, I believe my steady intake of garlic may have something to do with it (and my lack of social life too).

Also, I thought your last name was Chainring...oh well.

Hopefully you'll get through the treatment with great success, it sucks but at least it's fixable.

Get better soon.

Thanks. Maybe it’s time to change my avatar name to “Lyme Enthusiast?”

@Patrick 😆

Vet checking in. I'm not surprised you're finding ticks if you're "applying" something. I don't recommend anything on the outside of a pet. I'm much more in favor of anything you give orally.

Ask your vet about an isoxazaline. I don't even care which one or where you purchase it - Chewy is way more cost-effective than my office.

Will check. I'm actually thinking about having her tested for Lyme disease as the first one we removed had been sucking some blood before we realized it was there. She seems more letargic lately...definitely not showing loss of appetite though.

Our dog has seizures which seemed to be triggered by the use of Vectra years ago. We can't give him anything and being in the woods daily, are left doing as thourough as possible tick checks on both of us. He's vaccinated and all we can do is hope for the best. We def find embedded ticks from time to time regardless. I almost feel it would be prudent to just give antibiotics once a year or so, just in case, rather than getting tested for lyme.

I'm sorry to hear that. It's quite rare but it does happen. I don't generally recommend antibiotics without a clear indication - an annual round of doxycycline isn't likely to be helpful unless he's actively infected. It's not likely to help, and it may drive antibiotic resistance in the environment.

Lots of dogs will get exposed to Borrelia burgdoeferi (which causes Lyme disease), clear it like they would a cold, and then never have any more long-term problems. A small percentage will develop a life-threatening kidney problem. There doesn't seem to be a recurrent form in dogs - a few case-study genetic analyses of the bacteria have shown that if they get Lyme multiple times, it's because they were bitten by a tick again.

The good news in all this is that the Zoetis crLyme recombinant vaccine is incredibly effective, and incredibly safe. Other Lyme vaccines are also safe and effective, but for my money, crLyme is the industry standard. Even for dogs that have had Lyme Disease, it's still worthwhile to vaccinate them to prevent re-exposure. Preventatives when you can. Tick checks all the time. Prayers and rain dances for good measure.

It's a numbers game in this area - it's not uncommon for a dog to be exposed to 10,000 ticks in a year if they're spending any time outdoors, so even the best preventative's 99% efficacy means a few ticks will get through.

Nasty little creatures, man. Nasty.

people who leave their crap behind at an illegal campsite off the art loeb parking lot area.

and, yes... we cleaned it up

there was more in another spot that we also cleaned up but i didn't take a photo

Thank you for cleaning up, when riding Moto, I also try to bring stuff out of the woods.

I document with a photo most of the time and record it on Facebook. It makes me feel better.

I hope this was a river clean-up ??

Raritan Headwaters or Central Jersey Stream Team ??
I doubt it, it was nowhere near the river. It was Legion Park in Bound Brook which is about half way between the river and 28. I think they would’ve had a dumpster outside if they were having people dump river cleanup, stuff there.

Scratch that first comment, actually the Green Brook runs right along the park before it dumps into the Raritan river. So maybe it was a cleanup, but its still kind of odd that they wouldn’t have a dumpster there for it.

Thanks for the info doc. A few weeks ago, my daughter found one of these under my dog's chin and was likely there for a few days, she's a poodle and was still in her long cold weather coat. Ours was about the size of a pumpkin seed and this was in January/February.

We switched from Simparica Trio to Frontline topical and was wondering about the effectiveness. Even when using Simparica she got Lyme about 5-6 years ago, she's currently 10. Last year, she tested positive again for Lyme. Though we elected not to give her antibiotics as she wasn't showing symptoms. I'm taking her to a new vet next month as my longtime vet retired and the one who bought his practice doesn't work for us. Our old vet he'd let us save some money on the meds by cutting them with a pill splitter but the new one won't approve the stronger meds for bigger dogs, but the main reason was because she had to poke my fur baby 6 times before she was able to draw blood and my dog doesn't move or get overly excited at the vets.

Also, what's this vaccine you've mentioned? And yeah, they nasty...Screenshot-at-Jan-17-01-28-55.png

It was a mix of good and bad but it’s a great event.

Cloudy and warm the first 33 miles. Got poured on until mile 55. Let up a bit until mile 68. Downpours for the last 13 miles. In between lots of sugar sand segments to navigate but I only fell once and walked a few times.

The only saving grace was it was warm above 65F most of the day but it was pretty rough at the end.

This is my 4th time doing this event and is still go back. Just a few of about 20 pics I took.

Frown update.

I guess I concluded that riding all those rain miles at Pinelands got me sick , despite the fact that a few weeks prior we did MKF in much colder temps.

Going on Day 5 of massive sinus/upper respiratory infection I finally dragged myself to urgent care yesterday and got some antibiotics but I’ve got the full “head feels like it weighs 1000 lbs “ swollen sinuses and hacking cough. I know it’s temporary but im no good when I’m sick.

Feel better. Sound like the same thing that kept me away from MKF.

This is getting frustrating, every day we gong at least one on the poor bigger. What commercial drug has isoxazaline or is something to be strictly prescribed by a vet? She’s not due a visit for a while, November I thing…
