Trek Fuel EX8?

I'm buying a new bike soon and was more or less set on a SC Blur LT, but have a chance to get a great deal on a 2012 Fuel EX8. Any thoughts on this bike for the trails around NNJ and NEPA? The guy I was talking to has me thinking that the Blur may realistically be a bit more bike than I actually need. Other than the shorter travel, the only negative I'm coming up with on the Trek is that it seems pretty heavy (29 lbs+) considering it's not a burly AM bike.

Why do you feel the Blur would be too much bike? I like the geometry and travel better on the Blur. I also like that it has grease ports. This is very cool to have. Buy the Blur and go ride some real trails up in NNJ (that's right, I said it).

i had similar thoughts about how much suspension i "needed" on my most recent bike purchase, but i ended up with the SC Nomad and i have no regrets. I do not have as much experience on a variety of bikes but even with 6.3" of travel the nomad pedals amazingly up hills compared to my trek hard tail so i can only imagine the blur would pedal even better. I also opted for more travel as i want to give MCBP a little more time in my biking and overall wanted a totally different ride then my HT. So if u cant go nomad go blur haha ... i do take my 6.3" travel on rail trails as well which is mad overkill but when ever i am on it i become giddy and that is all that matters 🙂

What fun would this be if you just bought what you needed? Buy what you want. People tell you what you need because they wish they had what you want. Suckas.

I've never been on a Blur but I have a 2010 EX 8 and it is an awesome bike. I've since bought a 29er and don't ride the Trek as much but I would recommend the EX 8 to anybody who asks.

Blur

I have a al Blur xc and it is one of the best bikes I have. Hands down the vpp is a great fs setup. I feel it is more of a step up from the Trek as a better all around bike.

Wow Blur any day all day , sorry but i personally feel Trek is whack and whoever told you a blur is too much probably rides on fire roads. There is never too much unless you enjoy gravel roads and beginner trails . I hate how people give out misleading information , so annoying.

For NNJ trails i think 140-160mm fork is perfect, you wont regret it .

Wow, didn't expect it to be so one sided in favor of the Blur! I also just noticed that CompetitiveCyclist has the SC Nickel with a full X9 build on sale for $1999. I'm more concerned with getting the right bike than how much I spend, but it's also mighty tempting.

The guy at the bike shop didn't say outright that the Blur is too much bike for me. He just said some stuff that got me thinking that probably 60%+ of the time on my bike is spent doing climbs that aren't all that technical really (Stokes is on the way home from work, and 20 min from my house), so I need a bike that's good for that too. He did say the Blur is a great bike too, and they're a SC dealer.

Manny, to answer your question I want to become a better rider; and I think buying a bike that inspires confidence to do the aggressive AM stuff is an important part of that.

Careful, the SC Nickel does not use the VPP suspension that the Blur does. VPP is one of the reasons that people rave about the SC bikes.

The Blur is the right tool for that job. In addition to being a better quality bike than the Trek, the slightly slacker front-end geometry and travel are more suited for aggressive AM stuff. This is the bike that you probably would rather have in Ringwood or Wayway, which is where I assume you will spend some of your time, based on your location.

+1 on this ... you don't want to mistake APP for VPP ... Don't think SC had the Nickel and Butcher out for more than a year before sacking them ... Def vote Blur over Trek, though ...

I have a 2011 EX 8 and it kicks ass.< but my advise is ride the both of them and then decide on what bike you like better
:getsome:

Yeah, I'm aware it's APP rather than VPP. The Nickel gets almost universal positive reviews over on mtbr though.
