Verizon Droid

My wife just picked up the Eris. With $100 rebate and another $50 off for reupping for 2 years, it cost just $29. She wasn't that interested in the Droid since, let's face it, it's a 'guy' phone (or at least marketed that way), and there was a month-long wait for the Incredible, which was also $120 more. I think it's perfect for her; I may get one as well when my Blackberry, which I can't stand, dies. Super cool phone. What's everyone's favorite Android apps to download?

The Eris is probably perfect for the wife. But for you, IMHO the extra $120 for the Incredible is well worth it when you consider the overall cost of the phone. (Normal calling plan + Data plan) x 24 months. The Eris is on closeout and the Incredible is at beginning of life and will be that much more future-proof. Also the Droid 2 is due out this July.

What does the Incredible have the Eris lacks? I know the Eris has the previous OS, but honestly outside of being slightly slower, what's the big diff?

android 2.2 (and eventually 2.1) will support flash. The earlier releases wont. The slightly faster processor is noticeable too

Apparently Froyo (2.2) made huge improvements in speed.... So you will see big gains on the same hardware.

Any inside info on if/when 2.2 is coming to the motorola droid? People get way too fired up about this on the android forums so I don't even bother looking into it

I honestly have not heard a thing. But if how long it took to get. 2.1 is any indicator, it wont be any time soon.

i just got the update to 2.2 on my phone... so if its anything like last time I would guess the public will get it in a month,. Thats assuming there arent any major bugs

its sick. Totally speeds up the phone. No lag at all while texting. Its like a new phone. It makes you not regret holding out for an incredible

😀 Good because I was staring to regret it! A coworker has the Incredible and it's awesome.

But why wait for the incredible if the new Droids are coming out soon after?
Good question. The extreme and Droid 2 have been floating around the lab and I guess its because they have an early version of software, but people who have a choice are sticking with the incredible. Those early software versions have a tendency to suck batteries dry. I'm sure by launch date they will be commercial ready.
But now that froyo is out, everybody will be using the original Droid.

So what say you people in the know about the driod X? Better/worse than the incredible?

People in my lab who have a choice have been using the x.
The battery is sweet ( as far as smartphones go) and the HDMI out is a sweet option. No Droid 2.2 yet. But I'm sure it will come.
It is a bigger phone though. So play with it and make sure you don't mind the size.

The touchscreen on the Droid-X is ginormous. If you have small hands it will probably feel akward. But if you have ape hands like me, it feels fine.

Um, so this is specifically aimed at the Droid folks......

The new droid has what I'd call something the lines of hardware DRM (something that was pushed a while ago and people went crazy over). It has a chip (eFuse) that if you touch any part of the bootloader i.e. "rooting/hacking" it with another version of a non-motorola based OS (including android 2.2) it will kill your device making it completely useless....To quote another article:

"And if the eFuse doesn't see specific, pre-programmed code within Motorola's guidelines, it will essentially short out and the Droid X will cease to function at all. (To resuscitate the phone, you'd need specialized hardware only found at Motorola.)"

I wouldn't buy it out of principle, hardware enforcement of BS policies like that are good for no one. It's one thing to not let it happen (and have a scene work towards making it happen), it's another to actually render your phone useless in the case that you do attempt it 😉

That does sound rather lame.

Ok...im a bit in the dark with this stuff, so someone splain to me....

Droid X, Droid, and incredible use android 2.1 correct? When android 2.2 comes out I would imagine that you would be able to upgrade to it? Or is 2.2 something else entirely?

I have giant bear claws for hands, so I would prefer a bigger phone. I tried using the standard incredible keyboard last week in the store and I wanted to smash it over my head. While I use my gf's digital droid keyboard quite easily. So I was leaning towards the bigger phone, but I have not tried the X yet

Correct me if I'm wrong but unless you plan on hacking the phone you have nothing to worry about....

From what I have read so far it seems as though the Droid X hardware is awesome but Motorola's blur interface leaves a lot to be desired. Like ellbiddy stated the phone is locked and/or protected so there is no way around it. I would have prefered just the Android operating system without an overlay or skin like the Google Nexus.
