Watches

So I moved on from my $10 Amazon China watches. I kept coming back to the Vaer field models. Japanese quartz movement, 40mm, 316L SS, sapphire crystal, screw down crown, 300ft water resistance, lots of lume, tons of 20mm quick-release strap options, and the availability of multiple SS bracelets. And a US company (well, California). I was leaning towards the Dirty Dozen for $290, but surprisingly the S5 date model ended up in the Prime Days deal for $130, marked down from $190, so I jumped on that. I will happily wear it on African Safari next month! And some dude on FB Marketplace just picked up my $10 watches and straps for his boy scout kids.

Looks great. I love the contrast of the black dial with white hands and markers. The lume is amazing. Enjoy it and have a great trip.

Someone at Auto Zone noticed my daily beater today. This was the first time anyone ever commented about that watch. He wants to get one just like it. He asked to have a look and then took a picture of it. I never thought someone in the early 20s would be into vintage watches.20250719_164116.jpg

Way back in kollege I had a black on black swatch. It was awesome! While playing racquetball (it was the 80s) I smacked it against the wall and cracked the "crystal"

I miss the look. While my Rado is understated, there are still gold bits.

Saw this Movado, and instantly pulled the trigger. I probably should have gotten the 39mm instead of the 41. I may still exchange it.

Trying to match the Yukon?

Nice. This 41mm does seem a bit large for your wrist but I can't tell how it feels. 39mm may be a better choice. Different brands of the same size wear differently. I tried on a Seamaster again yesterday. Despite it being 42mm it wears perfectly on my small wrist and feels great.

My Omega is long overdue for service. Probably because it costs $900. Has anyone ever used a different service center other than the manufacturer?

No. When I bring my watch in to get serviced they've sent it out to the manufacturer to do it. It takes a couple of months to get the watch back so I hope you have a back up.

Dickens Jewelers in Clinton did my Dad's watch. I just dropped off the GF's inherited Rolex LadyDate (1999) which was daily worn and never serviced but still about +/- 5 seconds a month.

Victor, the owner, said if sent to Rolex, they would want to replace crystal, crown, and polish it in addition to service. $1500 easily, maybe $2000. He's doing full service, light polish of crystal, no polish to case or bracelet (we like the light patina), plus the water proof and timing test for $800 to $900. He said a few weeks turn around.

Victor was a manager at Patek service, so he's the right guy, locally.

I'm still undecided how I feel about the "patina." I wore my watch daily in the shop for 11 years. Banged it so hard, so many times off of so many sharp objects I can't remember. Still looks great. However, I hear that from Omega it will come back looking essentially new. That would be nice until the first scratch.
