Westchester police: Body found in Blue Mountain Reservation

Initial reports indicated incorrectly that the body was at Croton Point Park.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the body was found hanging from a tree, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.

Wow!

Wow…..sounds like the body was hanging for quite some time. It’s a good thing they found him because I’m scheduled to ride Blue Mt tomorrow and the headline would have read “Two bodies found, one hanging, one clutching a bike apparently dead from cardiac arrest.”

PEEKSKILL - A group of hikers stumbled across a dead man hanging from a tree yesterday afternoon at Blue Mountain Reservation.

Westchester County police had not determined the man's identity as of yesterday evening.

Investigators said they had not ruled out foul play in the man's death, while suicide was a strong possibility.

The man's body, found in a remote section of the 1,500-acre county park that straddles Peekskill and Cortlandt, was partially decomposed.

"It appears the body was here for several days," said Capt. Thomas Gleason of the county police.

The state of decomposition was so far advanced that police were unclear how old the man was or what his racial background was.

Police were called at 12:30 p.m. after the hikers made the discovery.

The body was about 50 yards away from a path in a section of the park that is not well-traveled, near Montrose Station Road, police said,.

"If these people didn't find it, it would have been there for a while longer," Gleason said.

The body was hanging from a rope. A small rock ledge was nearby.

A police dog was brought in to search the area, and forensic investigators checked the body and the immediate surroundings.

The man was wearing cargo-style shorts, a T-shirt and Adidas sneakers.
