Wharton Conditions

Rode at Batsto yesterday; rode the entire length of blue, white, and red, and both orange legs between blue and parking lot. There a lot (dozens?) of trees down, especially on the upper blue. Surprisingly there were not many trees down on the white and hardly any on the red. Some of the trees could be ridden over or around, and others could be handled with a dab over, but there are numerous big trees that will have to be cut out to be passable. I have to say though, the weather was great and the riding was still very enjoyable.
A lot of wind the last week. Between the fires and the pine beetles there are a lot of dead trees. Thanks for the update.

I'm still post-op recovery for a few months more. Give a yell (or anybody else on the crew) and I'll loan you a saw or two. Thanks!

According to the NJ DEP Forest Fire Service website. There is an active prescribed burn near the Carranza Road area today. With five more planned for the coming week. Check for burns before heading out in the next months.

"Give me a KatanaBoy long enough, and a stump on which to stand, and I will saw the world in half." Archimedes of Syracuse NY said that nearly half a century ago.

picture and text below sent from a certified sawyer all-star...
"Went out today and tackled the PBT. Cleared 12 trees in the first 10 miles. Many were 2 cuts and huge. Traversed clockwise left 2 trees you can ride over but the oak about 5 miles from the finish was one too many. Ill go back for it with the axe. Started at 10:30 got done at 3:30. It was a day. Noticed toward the end where PBT and HBT merge its getting muddy. I'd hold off clearing anything on the HBT till it dries."

Are you already better from surgery? If you give a couple days heads up I could meet you out there.

The resent fire reminded me of a ride 5 of us did in that area. This was a few years ago when water was abundant. Leaving from Carranza Memorial and headed to the Batsto trails. All was going well until we were close to the parking lot and found ourselves in a lake. Knowing where I was (of course), I said if we can get across to the railroad, we will be home in no time. We couldn’t, so tried other ways, and an hour or so later we got back to the parking lot.
Packing up and getting ready to leave, one of our new to us rider, called some person in Florida and said “Yeah I’ll take that job. How soon can I start”.
