What have you done to your bike today?

Gravel rig got more (and likely the last bit of big) love today. First was a Zipp 0 offset seatpost. Geo on this bike really was making a comfortable fit difficult with the Roval Terra 20mm offset.

Now, on to the fun stuff!! As promised, the first (and let's be honest, likely only) S-Works branded Sirrus X!!!! Gold is exactly the shade I was going for, couldn't be happier.

Got these from a NJ woman with a shop on eBay. She was very communicative, and happy to customize the package for what I wanted. Kitschy Stitchin'

Her husband was in Brooklyn a few months ago at a swap meet, I bought some Klein decals which are a tad small but my fault for not checking the size. Going to order the right size

I’ve built up a zillion bikes but believe it or not, I’ve never done a lower service myself at home. ☺️

IMG_8262.jpeg

Just a 50hr service this go around though I replaced the foam rings rather than clean them. The old ones were really dirty and I had a replacement packet. Would’ve replaced the seals too, but the factory seals were stubborn and I was too much of a chicken to pry harder. 😳. Any suggestions on the best way to lever those darn things out would be appreciated.

If you hear that I lawn darted myself, you’ll know how/why it happened. 🙄

My riding has been limited recently, particularly by orthopedic issues: first, achilles tendinosis, followed by (and still present to a degree) plantar fasciosis. But, the most recent prediction of rideable snowfall has gotten me motivated. I resurrected an old fatbike rear wheel fender that fit a previous frame but not the current one. By cutting a slot in the fender nearest to the seattube, I was able to create adequate clearance for the rear wheel. The original fender stays(?) were too short for the current frame, though, so I shaped some new ones out of a couple of metal clothes hangers. With the addition of some velcro straps for improved stability, I'm hoping the stays will be rigid enough to eliminate any contact with the tire while going over bouncy or rough terrain.

I now say...bring on the snow!🤞

And...I'm happy to report that the fender worked! There were only a couple of inches of snow this morning at Chimney Rock, but the bike and my back were snow-free. It appears that Patrick's "pro-tip" to Rain-X the rims was doing the job, too, although I think I'd need to ride in some deeper snow to really test both the fender and the Rain-X.

I don't know how durable those clothes hanger fender stays would be in a crash (the originals were thicker and stiffer), but I'm hoping to stay upright and let that remain a mystery in the future. 😀

If the coat hangers don't work out, try 1/8 inch stainless wielding wire.

Rebuilt shock back on. I’ve used the shock lab for my last 3 rebuilds. A fox 32 step cast, my Sid Ultimate, and this fox float. Both forks came back feeling much better than brand new. I’m excited to try this one out.

I previously had it rebuilt by that local dude in NY (gearwork?) and it was kinda meh. When I had it in the middle position, it would “fall” into the locked position during rides. I told him it was happening and I don’t think he even tried because it was exactly the same when I got it back. The damper service was done. And it felt better than before I sent it in, but it still fell into locked.

I can already tell that it’s fixed by the equal resistance between positions.

I'll keep that in mind, John. I used needle-nosed pliers to shape the coat hanger. Do you think I'd be able to do the same with the welding wire? With the added strength, that might be difficult to do with pliers. Maybe I would need to put it in a vice and hammer it into shape?
