Wheel build 101

Hey Matt, let me know when you start taking orders. I may need racing wheel-set. BTW, looks like you did great job! Congratulations🙂

We need a pic, not of your fat ass but a photo of the wheelset. Did you post one?

Ok, I started reading on page 4...doh

Nice wheels & professional looking shop matty.

I'm throwing this out here just for the sake of it. I would like to keep wheel building fresh but do not have funds to build for myself. With the success of my wives wheelset holding up now through the test of multi rides and a race. They have stayed round and true without a turn on the spoke. I would like to build another set. If any of you brave souls would like I will build a wheel or set at no cost except for the parts. I can help in deciding what would best work for you and spoke calculation.

Im not in the market for a new wheel set right now but you can build my next set when I am... Here it is: DT Swiss 24o rear and Lefty hub up front, flow rims and brass nipples... I am not to keen on spokes so thats where you come in... Sturdy is more important than weight for me

id take you up on that if i had extra money hanging around, an extra wheelset would be a great thing to have (meaning my current set would become my backup)

This is awesome matty. I too just need some funds to scrape up as well, i'd like to replace my rear wheel some day...actually both wheels.

I wish I would have know you were going to do this before. I ordered a new wheelset a few weeks ago. Ironically, I looked for advice here and went with one of your recommendations you gave in an old post 😀

Hmmm...I'm sure after a summer of bike camp on the SS, I will definitely need a new wheel set for the beauty...we can make them purdy...we'll chat!!!

Check with people in August as some guys may look for a tubular wheel set and IMO, hand built is the best way to fly for the first set (eg- ultra hubs, dt comps and velocity rims are a rock solid, fairly inexpensive wheel set). I've built about 10 wheels now and agree that it is a practice thing.

This is great Matty! I need to build wheel set for racing. I'm thinking ZTR crest with Hope hubs.

and yes alloy nips. Chances being near salt next to nil.

The alloy nipple thing is false. I use alloy nipples nearly 100% of the time at the shop and 100% of the time on my own stuff. If you want a good real-world example look at the Mavics, the Ksyrium Equippes (steel) will rot out in a season, yet the alloy Ksyriums last forever (or at least until the rims crack😉)

Same here! Took his advice too. If I would have known I would have paid him to build them.
