wow, wtf kind of design is this?Any BMW experts here?
Wife called yesterday that an alarm sound was coming from the rear of the car while driving. Turned off car and it continued. I'll cut the story short. Google pointed me to the rear liftgate module being submerged in water. Sure enough. The battery and this module sits in rear hatch (in about 3" of water).

There is a nice drain plug but with it closed the water just accumulates.

The liftgate module sits inside a styrofoam enclosure that I think was designed to keep any water below it. However the water was so deep it just went up and I’ve and filled the module with water.

Hopefully I can dry this thing out and it might work again. Then of course there is the bigger issue of where the fuck all this water is coming from.

Nah. We had the dealer disconnect that when she bought it. This is to actuate the liftgate.Bro, that's the blinker fluid reservoir! Now the turn indicators are hosed. And people wonder why bimmer drivers get such a bad rap...

As far as the source of the water....this is in the rear hatch area? does the rear hatch have channels maybe with drain tubes? Something clogged?
It's not the sunroof drains. They are clear. Dried out the control module and everything is working normal again. Reinstalled in a ziplock bag for a little more protection. But I gotta find that leak because there are a bunch of electrical connections and a few other control modules in the same area. There is also a fuse box on the rear passenger side that can take on water too. Thankfully, this one didn't.How on earth would a clogged sunroof drain divert water into the trunk well? I've seen them make the sunroof itself leak but its not like the trunk is the bypass. Probably just a bad seal on or around the actual trunk opening leaking down behind the paneling.
Next on the list. I checked with a flashlight thru the front and back of them and everything looks bone dry. I need to get everything out to see for sure. Fun way to spend the day between customers. Most common area for water leaks into your trunk or rear storage area are the tail lights.
Now that everything is dry, hopefully tomorrow's rain will point me in a direction.
Make sure that the edge guard(rubber seal) of the cargo area is not coming off easy, is the seal that sits where the tailgate door closes. Another possibility may be the sunroof drains(may be clogged or kinked... it all depends on how new the car is, if is too new than the sunroof drains may be kinked or separated from the tray, and it should be covered under warranty, and remember that other things may be possible too, but the most common issues with a newer car may be the couple of things that I mentioned. good luck on your findings.Any BMW experts here?

I was driving through the Bronx and half my exhaust dropped off.A good welder may be able to put that back together for ya depending in the condition of the tailpipe
I was driving through the Bronx and half my exhaust dropped off.
At a light, a dude got out of his car and gave me his card- auto shop/welder.
Dropped it off and he made it right by the end of my day.
Gotta support the independents.
Yes.So you're saying I would have been luckier if my exhaust fell off?
I have see people put in a smaller O.D. piece of pipe to bridge the two back together than weld it...its hack, but I have seen it work well so long as you can get something that fits reasonably well

Gorilla glue that bad boy back on and get your $15 back.Dang, its just not your week is it? Water is a real sumbitch...
I got 180k out of this one so i guess i can't complain. Went to start her up the other day and it was turning over reall sluggish. It fired but then was howling like a banshee. Popped the hood only to see the serpentine belt turning and smoking but the alternator pulley was not. Ran around the door to kill the ignition and hear the *POP* as the belt let go with vivacious enthusiasm!
Bearings locked up tighter than a nun's... well.. you know. Housing cracked in several places and falling apart. There goes my core return credit...
