I am no spring chicken at 53

Oh hey me too! We should meet up on a porch one day and throw shoes at eBikers.

In all seriousness, I think the eBikes rules are the same as any rule. It's the spirit of being an asshole that gets you in trouble. Isn't it a state mandate that we all have bells on our bikes? How many of us follow that rule? How many people drive 25 mph or less in town? The list of small rules that the general population ignores is almost endless. The government has made rules that seem inconsequential and petty since the dawn of time. And we, as citizens, are left to determine which rules & laws should be followed and which should not. And by and large, many of us have come to the conclusion that a large portion of these laws are designed to give the authorities the right to detain assholes for being assholes.

Moral of the story? Drink your Ovaltine! And don't be an asshole.

This is anarchy and will lead to confrontation. Exactly what I am hoping defined and observed rules/laws will help avoid.

The automotive laws you refer to being ignored also may be contributing to a rise in road rage.

So, this is not a take I agree with at all.

I am an advocate of civil discourse and yes, agreed to/reasonable rules and regulations.

I live in an area with bear, wasnt aware of the law but in compliance because bikes are quiet and it’s easy to spook bear on a bike. Bells create awareness, but are goofy.

So yes. I have a bell. Probably too fancy for the purpose it serves, but oh well.

I also wear a helmet and have been avoiding my colonoscopy. Anything else you need to know?

And back to the pics where it is clear, by way of signs posted at trailheads or clearly marked statements that e-bikes are not permitted, it’s OK to just ignore?

@Santapez you are in a position to enforce the laws (I assume)? Appreciate your take if I am reading that correctly.

Mother's maiden name, last 4 of your SSN, and what was your pet's name as a child. Thanks.

And ok you got me if you actually have a bell.
To be clear, nothing to do with law, just serendipty in guess. But I have had situations where I was bombing a downhill and came up on a bear way too quickly.

Fortunately they scare easily and it ran off. It could have easily gotten scared and reacted differently, so now I have a bell and when I remember, pepper spray.

I am going to back to asking you if you have a bell on your bike. Because if you don't, you're at the same level of law breaking as the eBikers.

the law is ambiguous with bells... one could argue my voice is better than a bell because i can be louder and clearer with my intentions (PASSING ON YOUR LEFT)

A bicycle must be equipped with a bell or other audible device that can be heard at least 100 feet away, but not a siren or whistle.

(Edited to clarify NJ law)

I don't personally enforce laws.

If I decide to start enforcing them, it won't be legally. I guess I'd be like an action movie character, so that would be cool I guess. I don't need another hobby though.

So when you lived in NJ, if you were so inclined you could have strapped your cat into a basket or something and been in compliance?

For the “bell curious”, here’s the Knog Oi. Barely noticible, nicely “engineered”. Only omits audible sound when you want it to (won’t ring as a result of rough terrain).

But $20-30 is tough to swallow for a bell.

You'd think a $30 bell wouldn't be an issue for people who routinely rip out perfectly working cable rear derailleurs for wireless, or buy a whole new set of carbon cranks for ones that are 5mm shorter.

That would be an interesting test of the law.

But, your honor, MEEEEEOOOOWWWWW!!!!

Both NY and NJ are pretty clear that they do not see e-bikes of any class as permitted use on any natural trail systems (single track and etc.)
Do you have something in writing or a overall state law code that confirms this?

My understanding it's up to the park supervisors.

I would dig for governor donkey faces enacted law to class 1 but I'm too busy.

Have you actually ridden one for a solid 2 hr/ 20+ mile ride to confirm they are not what you think they are or is it just because your 50 now and started screaming "get off my lawn"

It's a bummer that sterling went that direction.

You will own one within next 5 years, guaranteed. I've seen this too many times🤣
