Well I am happy to say I haven’t been here in a while. Based on the ratio of riding time/miles to crash injuries I am way ahead of the game. I guess today my luck ran out.
Was at around mile 45 of a 50 mile gravel ride on the Morris greenway and at around 16 mph I hit an embedded rock that was hiding in the shadows and lost my grip on the bars. I was just in the process of transitioning to stand up for a few pedal strokes when it happened.
Went down moderately hard on my left side and took most of the hit to my upper quad/ hip, my forearm , side of my left knee and just barely “bonked” the left side of my head on the ground.
Lucky for me I was able to do the “I just crashed what hurts” inventory pretty quick and assessed that I didn’t have any major injuries Thank GOD. Got back on the bike and made my way the final 5 miles home with no issues. Aside from some scrapes on the left shifter the bike seems to be fine. Very happy it wasn’t the drive side that went down.
Got home and headed right to a hot shower where I had to scrub to get some of the gravel bits out of my arm and knee. Yes that was unpleasant.
After that got to cutting the grass for a few hours. During that time the left hand where the pinky meets the palm knuckle started swelling up a bit so been icing it during /after dinner. And the hip/quad raspberry I expect to turn the 7 shades of purple this week
After the 2nd shower I decided the forearm needed tegaderm to prevent infection plus I don’t have big enough patch type bandaids to cover it. Already feels better.
I held off taking any Tylenol for now so I could gauge any possible concussion symptoms but so far I’m ok and my head wasn’t a hard hit but the helmet is toast. Glad it did its job.
I know It’s cliche but it could have been worse. Time for a few days off the bike.
