We should change this thread to: Reasons why everyone should wear knee pads.
yup I agree - still consider myself lucky after my crash 2 years ago where I had a minor fracture of patella and the top of my tibia and I WAS wearing knee pads. spent a week non weight bearing/crutches in the immobilizer, then 2 weeks no crutches with the immobilizer, but I was allowed to take it off at night. I was back on the trainer after about 3.5 weeks for self PT and back on the road 4 weeks later.

Im sure its somewhere in this thread but long story short, the doc said if I had that damage and I had the knee pads on, he was 100% sure I would have shattered my knee on whatever I crashed on - which was probably a rock.

Yikes! Reminds me of when I caught a pedal to my left shin during a high-speed crash in mud at Mt Snow back in 2000. The result was 30 min of scrubbing by the nurse at the mtn care center and 14 stitches along with a bottle of antibiotics with the warning, "I'm pretty sure I got all of the mud out, but it's hard to know for sure, so take these for a week."

While I was in the care center Pro practice had started and before I left I was joined by Steve Peat (separated shoulder, I think) and a very young Mick Hannah (broken collarbone).
I think I witnessed that Steve Peat crash. IIRC, it happened above the rock garden where most of the spectators hang out. Not a particularly gnarly section. We were close enough to hear the sickening sound of him hitting a tree and my buddy and I were the ones that got him situated and retrieved his bike.

Posted the "how" over in the Lifetime Injuries" thread. Here's the inside and outside of the fractured patella. No fun photos of the rotator cuff.

Ouch. I'm immune to patella fractures. I smashed both of them to smithereens in a motorcycle crash when I was 20 and they removed them. Turns out you don't really need them.

Wow, I had a very similar injury from a few year ago. This was at nica practice riding stuff that would not be nica approved. The kids got a good in person first aid session. It could have used stitches that i didnt get and there is a feel-able divot. I definitely dogged a bullet on this one.
