Helmets...Get Yer Helmets....

I agree with both of you that in a free country you SHOULD be able to choose for yourself. What you are missing is that we DON'T live in a free country. A-holes who don't take the proper precautions get hurt, and instead of taking the attitude of 'I was stoopid, I crashed, I had no helmet, I got hurt' they sue everyone because the place where they bonked their numb skull was allegedly too dangerous. your RIGHT to not wear a helmet comes with your BURDEN to accept responsibility for that choice. Unfortunately, too many people here in the good ole USA don't get that critical connection!

THEN THEY SUE, & RIDING GETS BANNED in the park for everyone.

SO...your stoopid peoples right to be an idiot and not wear a helmet in a park coupled with their refusal to accept responsibility for the results of their actions, prevents others from being free to do what they want :getsome::getsome:

+ us grown ups riding around with no helmet sets a bad example for our kids...and you KNOW if a kid falls and bonks their head somebody is getting sued....

Back to Keeping it simple: Wearing a helmet is SUCH A SIMPLE THING that prevents soooo many potential problems its beyond dumb not to.

They will sue even if they are wearing a helmet if they are going to sue at all, so sorry I can't agree. Plus riding will not get banned for crying out loud. If people get hurt then people will have to complain and then the stupid goverment will make more rules like they did for motorcycles. They weren't banned, the riders in most states were just forced to wear helmets Again it is all about minding your own business, it's that simple.

I do a small road ride once in a while and the lycra clad roadies spend more time yelling at me when I have no helmet on and it's freaking annoying! Last month a large group was in front of me so I yelled😱n your left", one prick started pointing at his head like he was doing the safety dance. because he was so bent on telling me my business he wiggled and almost took out his group. This is why I say and told him to his face, "shut up, it is my f'ing business, not yours and it never will be". When I was riding my road bike in the seventies I wasn't wearing a helmet so I am comfortable on the road without one. You can yell all I want and you will get the response I give most, "I left it on you mothers headboard" !

I hate where my country is going and this attitude is just fueling it all. Pretty soon no one will be able to do squat with out getting in trouble or being monitored. Not sure about you but I don't want to be told how to live my life.

For the record I always wear a hemet on the trail and with my kids to set an example, but that is my choice!!

My opinion on this is pretty simple.

I don't really care if you ride w/o a helmet on the road or in your backyard.

What concerns me is that an injury could threaten trail access for mt biking.

It is that simple.

If one serious injury or death is prevented by the helmet police, then it is worth it.

I am in a unique position as I see many folks bring back their smashed helmets to inspect. It happens a lot more than you might think. I have smashed in at least 1/2 a dozen helmets over the years. Maybe I would have been ok w/o a helmet but why take that risk.

I am all about preserving personal freedom, but to have the freedom to ride local trails was taken away for something so easily preventable is foolish.:popcorn:

I seem to be collecting helmets from somewhere. I have 3 I can donate to someone who doesn't own one, 2 are brand-new, 1 is used, all are medium. Maybe I can just leave them at the trailhead of Six-Mile?

If one's principles regarding personal freedom are so strong, than having someone tell you to wear a helmet should be no big deal. It's always easier to do what you want to do when faced with no opposition.

And what does it say when a person has less concern for his/her own welfare than a stranger does?

They wont sue because they'll get up laughing instead of not get up.

Riding does get banned when people get hurt badly, which is often related to helmetlessness (is that a word?)

Its not where this country is going, its where it is. I agree with your anger about the loss of freedom in this country and its general direction 500%, but the reality is exactly what it always comes back to.... your decision to wear a helmet or not does not just impact you. It can impact me in a negative way. I don't like that either. I refuse to sit idly by and let someone elses stupid decision ruin my day.

Here's why helmets are good. Wear a helmet...more likely to live. Not wear one, more likely to die. http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2008/06/motorcyclists_head_injuries_up.html

Right on....

If you feel safe enough to ride helmetless that's your choice I suppose. Don't let the "man" get you down. It is still a free country beleive it or not. We're all entitled to our opinions and mine is if you ride anywhere with out a helmet you're a f*#king idiot.
This is the same arguement you get from the motorcycle guys that say "helmet laws suck, let those who ride decide" Most all of us here are skilled experienced riders. I'm not worried that I'll fall off my bike, I'm worried about the lady driving the black Mercedes, talking on the cell phone veering to the left then shooting into the right turn lane 20 feet in front of me on tuesday evening. As I pulled up to her at the light she's still yakkin' away. I say "You need to get off the phone and pay attention to your surroundings" I got a blank stare😕 The light turned green, she turns and I head straight.

Where was I going with this?
Helmets 🙂
No helmet 🙁

being a noob

helmets on the trail is a must to protect yourself from nature (personally fell off the bike many a time)

helmets on the road is a must to protect yourself from the d-bags on the road too busy talking on their phone or putting on their makeup or texting, to pay attention :getsome:
