Well working in IT has perks (which I'm about to loose).

The company uses Websense to block sites for the general population. My IT department was in a unique group which gave us extended access. A few months ago the IT department manager flipped a switch and the IT department was blocked as well.

A couple of the the guys in IT saw that as a challenge. They boosted the signal on a wireless router in our lobby so that we could connect to that instead. Then we went into into our computer inventory and took some machines back to our desk for testing. 😉

So for the last couple months I've had two machines on my desk. One for work and one for screwing off. 😀

On Monday, I report to Voorhees and will be among the scum. It's kinda like taking a policeman's badge and throwing him in prison with the Gen Population. 😱

So, Monday you're going to get beat up by the serfs it sounds like.

We've had various things blocked at work since I've been there. But my BB was always able to cobble up Yahoo Mail and Facebook. A few months ago they made it company policy across the board to lock everything down, so the different areas (NY, Brooklyn, Chi, SF, Fla, etc) all lost access as a unit. That's when my BB got shut down. I work from home as much as I can these days for any number of reasons.

Next week I get an iPhone with an unlimited data plan, so whatever.

Today I went to Fred's house and Ben joined led us in some high-end intervals. Tough stuff:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/8437973

Note the moving speed. 7x2:4, bursts of 10 pedal strokes standing at 30/60/90 seconds. These hurt, and by the end of each one I was panting like a dog. I was able to complete all 7 though, with my HR hitting 184-186 at the end of each one. It took me about 45 seconds each rep to hit 171, the low end of my L5. You can look at the large chart to see where we did the 7 climbs. In all, I was very happy with how well I responded. It was also beneficial to have other people out there because there was no way in hell I would have done the last 2 had I been by myself.

After this, we discussed the point of these and what situation they may help you in. Then we discussed paceline riding and I rode in a paceline for the first time ever. It was our very own 3-man paceline. This is not to be confused with riding single-file and peeling off occasionally and dropping to the back. I never knew there was a difference. Now I do.

Tomorrow

Hoping to get up ultra early and ride for 3 hours, something in the mid-low tempo realm maybe. After that it's a quick shower and then we're off to Lancaster until Tuesday. No bike Monday or Tuesday.

Sunday morning earning my scrapple:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/8444710

Note: Scrapple is not recognized by Firefox as a real word. WTF?

Aim

Workout was intended to be solid tempo, 135-155. Spent a ton of time out of zone, both above and below. Averaged 142 for the ride which is off the 145 ideal. But close enough. The last 40 minutes or so I left it out there because I'll be off the bike now for the next 70 hours or so. Plus I'll be eating pies and whatever else they eat out there so I need to earn it. Having said that I was really all over today, having problems keeping the HR below 155 on climbs and above 135 on flats.

I Was Wrong

After all this time I'm going to go ahead and say the HRM is a pretty valuable tool for me. Years ago it set me straight that I wasn't going hard enough. Now it's letting me know that I've probably got a tendency to go a little too hard too often. Today I said screw it and just did whatever. But over the past 2 weeks I'm getting a different perspective on my training.

Road Bike

Buy one. This week I got in almost 14 hours, all on the road. The trails are such a mess right now that if you only ride off-road and don't ride when it's sloppy, then you didn't ride this week. I know a lot of people are bending the rules but we collectively shouldn't be on the trails right now.

Unloading

I need to unload some of this accumulated training over the next 4 weeks. Next Sunday starts a stretch of 3 races in 4 weeks, then the summer lull hits. I need to back off some volume and try to show up at each of these as sharp as I can. The next 2 days I'll be off so that's probably enough for the Stewart race. After that I need to figure out how to taper properly without just going and losing too much fitness.

After That

After the next 3 H2H races (Stewart, LM, KVSP) the DH40 and 24 HoA are on the radar. If all goes well the DH40 may be my first expert race. And we've just put the finishing touches on the first MTBNJ 4 Man team. We'll be registering as an elite team to try to win the overall title. Could be a tall task but we have a pretty strong team.

Tomorrow

Lancaster and so on. Maybe pics to follow. Ok, must run and get out of here. No proofreading this entry so I may have said something dumber than usual.

Back from Lancaster. We left about 10:30 Sunday morning and got back 5:00 today. It was a pretty packed few days, Thomas the Tank engine on Sunday, Dutch Wonderland Monday, and a buggy ride before leaving today, in addition to the obligatory eating and outlet shopping. Good few days off but I'm happy to be back.

Had a few beers and big meals in the past few days so it's time to get back to the routine bright and early tomorrow morning. Ideally I'd do something like 2x20 but we'll have to see how I feel tomorrow after not entirely succeeding at avoiding the waves of butter-loaded food they serve you out there. I may just go out and ride a solid tempo+ loop around the swamp before heading into work and catching the backlash of having been gone for 2 days.

By all means, that would be awesome!

She's pretty much into anything right now. My mom bought her a toy buggy, Amish style. It's the greatest thing in the world right now. In a week, it will be living room tumbleweed.

Yup, same place. My parents live a half hour west of lancaster, so it was an easy place to meet and my son is into thomas right now.

If it works out with naps and all, I suggest aiming for the end of the day. The last train was 3:15 and by then a lot of people had cleared out. The place was apparently an absolute mob scene just hours earlier. There's really not much there aside from Thomas, a few extra little train rides is about all. And of course lots of stuff to buy. $18 a pop to ride that puppy too.

I'm on the train and I don't feel like reading. So my weekend...

We left Sunday at about 10:40, me with 3 hours in the saddle already. So I was good for the next 2 days. Got there at 1:10, met my parents at the hotel and had lunch at Outback, across the street. Weather was awesome.

Hit the Strasburg Railroad for a few hours then checked into the hotel. Had dinner there and a few beers and my daughter played with my parents all night.

Next morning went to Cracker Barrel for breakfast and it was much better than I would have thought. We may need to hit this place more often when I get huge morning rides in and have the calories to spare.

Most of the day was Dutch Wonderland which my daughter loved. At about 2:00 she was toast so we dropped her in the car and drove around a bit until she nodded off. We hit the Tanger Outlets after she woke up and I found a pair of running shorts at the Nike store in an attempt to replace the shorts I wear around the house. Turns out I chose wisely and I liked them so much I ent back and bought another pair the next day before we left. We then hit the next block of outlets looking for something or other.

Dinner was an "authentic" Amish place and it sucked. We went in the fall and my Amish Food Experience was the same. It's just not that good. We either need to try harder or give up. I had no idea the Amish ate instant mashed potatoes. After dinner we went back to the hotel and my wife and daughter hit the pool for a bit.

Tuesday we were back at Cracker Barrel for breakfast, then did a buggy ride which was really enjoyable. The guy driving the cart was a Mennonite so it was really interesting to hear him talk about the area and the history. Picked up some pies and honey and apple butter then found a small petting zoo area before we hit the road just as my daughter conked out. She slept until NJ.

In all a good 3 days. I got back on the bike this morning. It was a good thing. Will link that later.

I have a few dvds and some vcr tapes as well, you have a vcr in the house? if not I will bring one for you ( I have a bunch from some old jobs that still work fine that will eventually wind up in the trash)

No working VCR, so I'll take one of the freebies. My daughter will wonder what the hell it is. My wife may as well.

Thanks!

I guess I am showing my age again🙂 Although I am proud to say my kids do know what a record is.

Would it make you feel better if I admitted that I actually owned 8 tracks? Supertramp and Led Zeppelin are 2 that I remember.

I also remember going to the Great Adventure safari when El Caminos were still around and the monkeys would pile in the back. It sucks that they can't piss on your windshield anymore.

8 tracks baby, it was actually a brilliant format. How else do you get to hear 2songs at the same time, what a time saver!

Perfect, I think we have tickets for the 3:15 ride....

I do NOT recommend falling in love with Cracker Barrel. There is little on the menu that I find acceptable. I suspect they add butter to the orange juice. 😱
