Garmin Edge 705 and Mapping Software

Well what's nice is that you can have a few loops in different colors, or extensions of loops and shortcuts. So if you are feeling good add some, if you get a flat, subtract some.

I think you'll be easy Norm, in bike route toaster just select GPX instead of TCX.
Then:
Where to - Saved Rides
Select your ride
Setup Map
Pick your color, click the box that says "show on map"
Hit map
it shows up on your map, just to confirm.
Hit the left button, it returns you to the map setup feature and just hit Okay. You can now turn the navigation on and off and the map will just stay there.

ATTENTION, MAKE SURE YOUR FIRMWARE IS UP TO DATE.

This was impossible to do on last year's firmware.
If your ride doesn't have the "map setup" option, something is wrong. This is what I struggled with Utah with last night. The google maps tool screwed up the .gpx

I think you're missing some steps. First one, how do I get a GPX to the gps? Training Center only allows crs and tcx, so how am I bridging that gap?

if you upload it to BRT and then save it as a gpx will that work? brt will allow you to upload tcx and gpx files. 😕

wait norm I thought you said you were using BRT? If you go to the summary tab there is an option to save it to your garmin as a gpx, try that.

The key here it to not use tcx files, I have no idea why but those suck in the 705. Use gpx files in the GPX folder on the garmin. Works WAY better.

Ok, I give up, you win. That's f'ing awesome. You've just made my GPS much more powerful.

(The reason I didn't send directly from BRT->GPS is that I used to create the courses at work, then email them to myself and upload them when I got home.)

What is the problems with the tcx files? I have been using them for my routes and have had no problems not that i noticed anyhoo.:hmmm:

You can add the GPX file to your map. Like, for good. So any time you want to jump on the Lebanon 52 route (the one I tested) it's there. Or maybe I'm out in Califon with some time to burn (like yesterday), I can jump on it until it starts to take me in a direction I don't want to go.

So in theory you could throw on a whole bunch of routes, with different colors. Maybe I upload a bunch of climbing routes, all in red. Maybe the H2H race courses are blue (water) and I use yellow to indicate straight shots (say a county road to get home) or connecting roads from various places I ride. And so on.

I just discovered the ability to have gpx files showing on the map at all times, first time I really used it was for the Wilderness 101 last weekend and loved having it. It makes the unit so much better, although it was already pretty damn good.

But.

I went out today and now there's a new screen when I cycle through the "menu" button. It seems to be trying to give me instructions on how to get to this loop.

A. How do I get this off?
B. Does this mean I can't load 2 of these on my map for good?
C. If I do, will it alternately tell me to go to both loops?

Just hit menu - stop navigation
just make sure the map you load has the map setup option, and in there is the check box to "show on map"
it'll stay there for good (thanks to new firmware this year)
i'll do a write up on how to build and load up custom trail maps.

Okay I put a quick writeup on my site, where I can easily add files and keep track of everything. I'm hoping to eventually have a nice database of .gpx files for everyone there.
Pretty sweet that my google earth / .gpx plugin is working on my wordpress site too, you can see the map I uploaded. Awesome.

If anyone is interested in helping me out with this let me know. I have horrible authoring skills.

Sure, I'll help. Maybe we can make a front page here somewhere on the site. Resources are good.

Wow

I finally got to this. I left my place with a beer and my gps just to go explore. I just walked a mile! This thing is freakin cool!

I have a bunch of tcx files I need to make gpx. thats no prob tho. Much excite!

One thing that bothers me about navigating the course, not sure if it is possible to adjust. It signals directions every 10-20 seconds. and this is regardless if you do have to turn OR if you have 20 miles of straight road.

So it blocks out any other screen you're in with the instructions to basically go straight.

Besides turning off the navigation is there a way to adjust this?

Clarification - this is when one is following "Saved Rides" under Where To, not "Courses" under Training

I'm pretty sure you can set that differently kush, my 705 isn't with me or i'd check.

I can use all the help I can get, this week I'll do a writeup on how to create the maps this week. maybe tonight if I get home at a reasonable hour.

The font on that page is making my brain hurt. I used to be a big fan of white on black, but I've finally fallen to the style nazis and now agree that the contrast shortens my life span.

Do you want me to try and re-work that initial pass?
