Garmin Edge 705 and Mapping Software

Plus the maps are better but I have faith that you will find a way to not like it 😉
 
Okay I found the install to be a breeze, and awesome. I was all psyched to be all BAM IN YOUR FACE NORM I DO LIKE IT.
But the god damn street names don't work and clog up the screen. WTF?
Can I turn them off? I'll try
 
Yeah, ok, I'll grant you that. I figured I would try it tomorrow before saying anything but my road showed up as B...... T...... because it was too long. I'm going to play with it tomorrow and see how it looks.
 
Grrr I can't seem to turn off the street names. It wouldn't be so bad if it just didn't have them, since I can turn on the City Navigator maps if I'm actually on the road or something.
Maybe this winter I'll get serious and try to create my own NJ topo map that includes all the trails on the base map. That would be F'ing SWEET.
 
I like the abbreviations format. What is wrong with it? Ride it before bitching about it 😉
 
That would be because there are actual streets on the depot map. Not random highways. Something has to give.

In reality, when you are riding along on the road bike at any rate of speed, you'll find that you won't be using street names. But the abbreviations are there and perfectly fine when you do need a reference.

That's literally what my street shows as.
 
The garmin top map has every single side street name in it as well.
I got some crazy stuff working, but my eyes are burning. I doubt I'll get it working tonight but I got some progress on a hybrid map.
 
This depends on how you use the maps when you're riding.

I haven't had the need to see on my screen every single street name; I'd prefer more real estate on the screen.

But it could be different for you. Try it and report back. I'd prefer not to drop a c-note if I don't have to.
 
Luke whatever you are doing, just let me put it on my 705 and ill consider it a new tire 😀
 
I tried it today and now I'm wondering what I thought it was going to do for me. The map is so small to begin with it really isn't terribly useful. This has nothing to do with the map and everything to do with the limited size of the GPS. It sure as hell isn't Google Maps at your fingertips.

It's fine. I have no need for street names. It's not like they will do me any good if I'm lost. I do with it said "512" instead of whatever the road name is in that town. But that's a minor complaint.

It has rivers which is kinda cool. In all, I can't complain. I also didn't just explore or get lost. So that's TBD.
 
Yes, detailed street maps are not a panacea, but useful at times.

There were two times where I said I wish I had detailed map because a) bridge was out; or b) toaster thinks this dirt road is paved. And in these cases I don't need to know full name, initials are fine.

If I'm following toaster routes, full street names wouldn't matter.

If I'm going off exploring without a predefined map, I just follow the street lines. In this case, street names also don't matter.
 
I tried for hours last night and I wasn't able to get a custom map .img file onto the 705. i'll try again later, I am god damn determined to be able to stick the park trail maps into this freakin thing.
It seems the 705 is a limitation factor in my quest, some of the larger hiking ones it's easier done.
 
Ok, I got my 705 set up and running. I just have the NJ topo maps loaded up for now. Im downloading the others at the moment. I plan on taking it for its trial run in the morning if I can get up at 5.
 
I've read this entire thread and I'm have no idea on whether this device is worth the investment. Now that I finally have a road bike and a 29er, I need to find my next big biking purchase as god knows I can't go a month without dropping a grand on biking gear. I need an intervention. So should I make the plunge?
 
IMO there are some really cool features with the 705 that you miss with the previous versions. However I think they are ones that you can live without. The biggest push for me to pick this up is that with ANT+ I can train seamlessly with both my GPS and Power. If it were not for that Id do without it.
