Went for a ride this am on my cross bike and new some of my buddies were riding in the tourne so I rode over and met them. All was good and got some great miles in and started to head home. That's when the rain that we got must have frozen. I tried to ride down the hill leaving the tourne and needed to put a foot down to stop myself from eating pavement hard. Luckily my buddy(Matt9er) was leaving right behind me and picked me up and drove me home. It was sketchy enough driving in his truck never mind trying to ride home. I hope everyone was ok and avoided the mess. I haven't seen it this bad in a long time!

Word. I hear ya. I saw like 5 accidents from minor to major within 20 miles. Safe travels where ever you are headed.
Cut the ride short this morning. Pulled out of lot and then didn't quite understand why ppl were going so slow. Then my car started fish tailing and then it all clicked. DUUH!!!

Hells yeah its awful out there... yet I see the brainiacs ridin my ass then blowin past me like I'm the idiot! Smilin as I pass them slowly as they are scratchin their heads "how the heck did I end up in these here woods?"
For the love of all that is great SLOW THE HECK DOWN PEOPLES!

Packed up the truck around 10am. thinking it would be an okay day to ride. hit the road at 10:15 started raining and black ice started to kick in. Seen like eight accidents on the way to pick my buddy up. We loaded his bike up and the rain kept on coming and temps. were dropping. We ended up calling the ride offffffffff:cry:.....

I think we are in for a big surprise this winter. The WINTER GODS HAVE SPOKEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was up at Ringwood this morning before the rain hit. Still a bit of snow up there by the way. The roads were an icy, rutted mess from a week of hunters driving in. The trails were in decent shape. It started to rain on the way home. Did not look too bad at first, but then I saw cars off the road all over the place, especially the overpasses. Glad to make it home safely. Good day to stay home and make cookies.😀

Exactly-- Gingerbread men !!! Took a spin class this am. Closed my eyes and ended up in the Mts. of Virginia on a sunny day...😎 Stay safe everyone.

We did CR this morning, same thing. Started to rain around 10, headed back to the lot, didn't seem like much rain. We contemplated another loop until Ben headed towards the trail and just about dropped his ride; I saw enough. The normal 45 min ride took over 1:30.

I saw you guys at CR, you guys were rapping it up as i was heading out. I made my way over to Chimmney Rock Road to head up to the orange trail. As I was crossing the road my bike went out from under me. My main concern was getting the hell off that road before any cars came down the hill. Made it to the other side of guard rail and biked for about an hour...in safe mode.

started at 10 on the fixie. Took me a while to figure that my tires didn't suck and im not that strong... it was just icy. Every riser i stood up to pedal on my tire slipped. Yikes!

Luckily i was close to my cx training loop. Lowered my tire pressure and took a few loops on gravel and grass. Quite interesting dismounting on fixie. Creeped home safely, to sounds of fire truck and police car whistles.

I was coming back from Pyramid Mtn on Rockaway Valley Rd in Boonton Township and on the downhill just before the Alpaca farm it was all black ice. There were several cars off the road and it was impossible to even walk on it. It was as slippery as I've ever seen it. All the smart drivers were waiting for the salt truck. This stretch of road is always really bad as it's on a forested north slope of a hill.

Well we had a blast at Deer park started in rain and ended in rain. Conditions were great frozen solid underneath with a good amount of snow in areas. Came up to meet Brett and Chris who were ending their day (thanks boys for putting down fresh tracks on the back side). I only hope John and Rob made it home safe. We got a solid ride in today fo shore!

Me and Brett put in a hard fought 10 miles. Started off as a lil frozen precip but ended with a cooling rain. not bad if your moving. Trudging thru the wet snow is def a great workout, was my first real ride on the SS and damn I missed my gears today.

Safe and sound and dry and warm.
Great ride today. Conditions were challenging indeed.
Funny thing is none of us gave going in the freezing rain a second thought...

Rode Ringwood with a few folks to day, started at 7:30 and ended by 11:00 just as a light drizzle was starting. Overall a cool ride. We got over to Pearsons, which was great and untracked.

Given the slippery condition and the traffic reports, we ended up waiting it out at the little luncheonette over by McD's on Skyline Drive. Skyline was still closed when we left so we used backroads over to x55 on 287, where it was slow going with the icy conditions and several accidents along the way...

I saw 7 crashed cars on the way to the rock gym today.
If you don't own snow tires, you are a fucking idiot. The rubber on your tires stops working when it gets to the winter, they start being more like hard plastic and sliding on everything. Even if it's 40deg and raining snow tires work WAY WAY better because of the rubber compound. at 15deg your and dry, same thing.
I have 3 cars, 1 of which is AWD and all 3 of them get 4 snow tires every year.
Buy a 2nd set of rims off craigslist for your car, and get some tires from discounttire.com, or order a full set on steelies from there.
Your summer tires don't get any wear over the winter, so in reality the snow tires don't cost any more than the mounting costs and the price of the rims.
Then you can buy real summer tires, which work WAY better in the summer. All season tires are laughable in this part of the country. It goes from 0deg in the winter to 100deg in the summer.
God help the person that ever slides into me in the winter without snow tires. The cops will be prying me off of their throat.
If you can't afford $300 for snow tires, you can't afford to drive a car. You don't use cross tires on your downhill bike, do the same for your car.

And as luke preaches on, he should mention that he had tim come and pick him up at his house today. Tim has no snow tires on his little suv.

Fuck the snow tires, learn how to drive when the conditions are bad.

you are welcome to your opinion, but running a good set of all terrain all season tires on my truck has worked out just fine in everything so far, and my parents say the same thing, at that point there is no point to buying the snow tires. now granted we all drive 4x4 trucks and drive carefully, but there is more to it than just buying the tires and having them mounted. after buying them (if you can find a set of tires for my truck for $300 (4 tires) mounted i want to know where, the cheap tires that i find are more like 90-95 a piece (we paid 120 a piece for the set on it now) + mounting) and then after you have them you need space to store an extra set of tires, many people dont have that space so for them it is not a plausibly option to own 2 sets of tires for their vehicles.

Also on ice the only thing that is going to help are studded snow tires (illegal around here to the best of my knowledge feel free to correct me if im wrong) or tire chains (which are a PITA to use and when the break can cause alot of damage to your vehicle) so even w/ snow tires you are still f-ed on the ice

and also, dont ever try that on me, as you will be in the hospital having a knife blade extracted from your throat, i do NOT take it well when people get physical with me when it is unjustified as it would be in this case

Tim offered to drive, he lives 2 miles from me and we carpooled. I yelled at him for not getting snow tires 🙂

That's fine. If you can justify your irresponsibility and cheapness against your safety and those also on the road that's your business, this is America after all. Won't stop be from snapping when you slide into me.

this i agree with 100%

and irresponsibility, nope, i have a good set of tires on my truck, they grip fine in the snow/slush/rain/dry and on the ice there is NOTHING that will help you to stay in control of the vehicle, if you are so concerned about this you should not be driving in the bad weather unless you know how to handle the vehicle in said conditions, but even snow tires are not replacement for a lack of ability behind the wheel
