um, yeah not to piss on your parade but there are two things you need to know: (1) its gonna be up to 45 degrees the next 2 days so what was frozen yesterday wont be by Sun; and (2) Allaire and 6MR are apples to oranges (Allaire being fine is NO INDICATION that 6MR will be).

A recently-thawed 6mile COULD totally suck.

+1

6MR is a great place during a dry spell or when frozen fast....but notoriously succeptible to damage otherwise.

Hahaha....this is why I'll be on the road bike. It takes 6miles a LONG time to recover once a few people put some ruts and shit in the turns. I don't think I need to mention the work that goes into that place. On Wednesday myself, Eric and Ben were very siked with the shape it was in. Very smooth and fast 100% due to hard work and people doing the right thing and staying away. I'm not a trail nazi but I sure do sound like one.

some people on here go over board on the trail nazi thing sometimes. but if there is one place that needs to be completely avoided at times it is 6 Mile. That place gets damaged easily and the damage (e.g., rutted trails) sticks around for a while due to the nature of the soil (until the good folks who maintain the trails dig/cover the damage).

I think Jdog would say, go ahead and ride it. But you better come out when it's time for TM.

I've hit ruts and got tossed into trees, but that's cause I suck. I've also seen people go off the bridges because of ruts. Once your wheel goes in a rut it makes the bike do weird things sometimes bad things

Besides 6miles sucks I'll prob never ride there again...its too twisty

Yes and no.

We have been really lucky this year with minimal freeze/thaw.

It will be slimy slippery muddy on Sunday. You will be covered in mud in any spot that is sunny.

I was out on Tuesday and it was frozen solid and almost rut free.

IMO it is way more fun to ride frozen trails at 31 degrees than it is to ride a mud pit at 45 degrees.

6M will recover if you ride on Sunday, but keep in mind that you most likely will be negatively impacting the ride quality for countless others for the rest of the winter. I know this is hard to understand if you have not watched the freeze/ thaw cycle before.

Imagine that the top 6 inches of soil contains weeks worth of frozen moister. The first warm day is equivalent to riding after a 4 inch rainfall overnight. The clay based soil will be slick as shit. There is little chance that it won't be a mudfest.

Thunderbird?

Edit: Thanks for the input, as always Jay. Personally I've gotten to a point where I'm spending about $53,008 a year on bike stuff, so I try to avoid beating up my bike and hurting the trails in the process. I raced in enough mud this past year that I have no desire to ride in it when I have other options. This is a primary reason I ride Chimney Rock so infrequently considering to how close it is to my house.

riding 6MR when it is muddy is no fun. 6MR is different than all other parks around here. Getting your bike muddy is one thing. but the wet clay makes the trails REALLY slippery. someone else described it as "grease on glass".

in other words - dont be selfish. ride somewhere else.

so if you want a shitty ride that will damage the trails for others...go ahead!

Sometimes it's hard to explain your point without sounding like a Nazi. But some of us are in direct communication with the land managers who receive complaints about how the cyclists tear up the parks when the conditions are poor and that is from ALL users. Please remember that your actions could effect others.

Your signature sounds like me. I've asked that question once at 6Mile.

What about Saturday? Will the conditions be more acceptable for riding?

Conditions aren't going to be fun for riding after todays warm temps. The ruts you dig will freeze, and as Jdog said, you'll screw it up for all of us once it freezes again.

Six Mile wont be fun to ride all weekend long. It will be muddy and slippery.

Frozen ruts suck, please dont add to them. Then the park staff gets "The bike riders are ruining the trails" e-mails from angry hikers. Dont help them to bash us by riding in soft conditions.

The more time we spend having to fix stuff, the less time we have to work on other stuff. We have enough trouble keeping the sticker bushes off the trail in the spring. You local riders know how fast they grow in April and May.

I love to ride there too, but its counter productive to us as a group to rip it up when it gets soft.
