Winter in the Land of my Bikes & Wife

Saturday December 18th

Weekends are always a bit slow so I'm just sitting down to write this now at 7:12 so it will be a condensed version. This morning I cleaned my cross bike finally and then started to think more over what bike I'm bringing to Taiwan with me. I'm somewhat concerned about the gearing on the bike, being a 1x9 and all, plus the brakes on it. As you cross racers well know, cross brakes kinda sorta work, most of the time. The thing I'm thinking about is the bad gearing going up, and brakes going down, when I do something like this:

5271624934_43e55223f6_o.jpg

That's 8000 vertical feet in about 40 miles. I'm not sure the 1x9 with a 42x26 as my easiest gear is going to cut it. Then going down, I really want to have the confidence that if I need to stop, I can. The downside to that is rather The Suck, like falling into a ravine and so on. Not really into that.

I was stuck on the trainer this morning and I used the Fuji which I cleaned and got into reasonably working order with the old Can O' Beans wheels on them. For those of you who don't remember, Can O' Beans is the old Trek road bike that's been more or less stripped down to parts and laying all over my basement. In the literary industry, this is called foreshadowing.

So I'm on the trainer and at the 31 minute mark work calls so it turns out that it was the right thing to do in not going outside to ride. It all works out that way and by 10:00 work seems to be quiet, I got my ride in, and I was showered. Just before 1:00 we went to the Mom's Club Christmas Party which was about as exciting as it sounds. Men are just useless appendages at these gatherings. So I hung out with Julia the whole time. When Santa showed she was scared as shit and wanted to go home. Can't say I blame her.

But that's when it hit me. Why not bring Can 'O Beans on a reunion tour to Taiwan with me? I really have no use for it here, it's got road brakes which will work better than cross brakes, and it has a triple. This thing is like the perfect bike for Taiwan. And what the hell, I will probably just leave it there when I come home. If I can find a viable place to leave it then why not? It really has no run here, with Magic Bike for good weather, and the Fuji serving as my bad weather backup, I'll never actually ride it again. And it will be good to know I'll have a bike there for future trips. Now I just have to make sure I can find a place to stow it.

As a bonus, I've mostly stripped the paint off, so it looks totally ghetto and much less likely to get stolen. Seriously, would you steal that thing?

162628_1700527749013_1112505435_1959576_3381348_n.jpg

If I leave the seat off that might even be less likely to get swiped. I have a few things that need work, like a steerer tube extender and the rear hub. But in all, it's probably not going to be too difficult to get in running order and won't really cost me much of anything. And another bonus is that if it gets "lost" in shipping I really won't be all that bent about it. Finally, it will be an easy swap to bring the power wheel with me as well. If that got "lost" however, I'd kind miss that one.

So for now, that's my plan. I managed to land a bike suitcase thanks to Kirt and a super heavy-duty Modone box thanks to both Bill and Jim. I'm going to check my options and if I do plan on leaving the bike there I'll take it in the Madone box and then just leave it there so I don't need to pay to ship an empty bike carrier back. This just feels right. This bike has been looking for a purpose for 6 months, and I think it finally found one. Tomorrow I may change my tune.

Speaking of tomorrow, I've got the mountain bike loaded up on the car. It appears that I'm actually going to go for a mountain bike ride up at Allamuchy tomorrow morning. Bill and Utah are in with another 5-6 possible. This is kinda how I roll these days which is totally last second.

Bill says he ripped his tongue off or something today. We've been texting and I think I'm going to try to get him to ride consistently this year. He says I got him out last year but I think he needs a little more push to make it happen more regularly. The problem is, he really has no targets he wants to hit. He admitted that the DH40 result makes him more lax in regards to training, since he can get away with doing such random riding and still have good results. I need to find a way to motivate him better.

I'm sitting right next to the Full Tilt Boogie and I just need to remind everyone that this bike is really beautiful. It agrees that the ghetto cruiser across the basement needs to go. Magic Bike on the other side of the basement agrees as well. Fuji sees their point, but fears that once Can O' Beans goes, it becomes the de facto ugliest bike in the house. So in a sense, it likes the idea of keeping the ugly friend around.

I think that's all I have tonight.

Sunday December 19th

Went to Allamuchy North this morning with Bill, Utah, MattyB, Rob, Chris26er, Brett, and Mike L, who I was surprised to see still owns a bike. It was kinda cold but not terrible and starting at Tranquility means you warm up fast enough. Overall pace was reasonable, though when it starts to go up your HR follows, which hurts the legs a bit but it keeps you warm.

Matty tried to bail and go home to eat Twinkies but I wouldn’t let him and he did manage to stick it out. Have to say it was really nice to be out on the mountain bike again and I’m looking forward to getting out on it more, which is perfect timing since I won’t have one for 6+ weeks starting in 10 days. I think changing disciplines is a good thing, as I was stoked to ride the cx bike after road/mtn season and now I’m stoked to be done with it.

Bill said it was obvious I hadn’t been on the mtb in a while but I think that was because I was trying to go too fast to keep up with him, which is great for story telling but bad for my health. I didn’t crash on the fast stuff but I did come down hard riding a log and landed on my left ass cheek which makes sitting down right now a little uncomfortable. They said Kirt took a similar fall yesterday and unfortunately for him he has less padding to help with these falls. We did Lumpy Bumpy and then rode out on the white trail, and in the last 10 minutes Bill and I dropped the hammer and left everyone behind. On the final descent on white I was able to prevent Bill from riding my wheel which was an accomplishment. Need to get better on this thing. Well, on February 13th. Hey, anyone want to ride the mtb that day?

Dropped the PT wheel off at the shop and it turns out that one of the nipples had corroded and started disintegrating. So the “dust” that was coming out was remnants of the nipple. A quick look at some of the other nipples showed they were all like that. Likely this is from the time I had water in the wheel. Not thrilled with that, but it’s better to find out in my basement than in the middle of a field sprint at 35 mph and in an Epic-cosmos-ocean-like way.

Jim also wondered where all the parts to Can O’ Beans were. I realized after I wrote that yesterday that Jim’s eyes probably rolled back in his head when he read that. He likely figured I was going to bring him a bucket of shit and ask him to put it together. I was actually going to try myself but he said to bring it in so I went home and collected as much of the old junk as I could find and brought it down. I hung out for a while and it was probably best this way as he uses this thing called “lube” on that bike which is somewhat surprising as I was always under the impression that it would just keep going forever without it.

This is what it looked like this morning. This is almost 100% thief-proof:

5275705792_8a2f6026ef.jpg

We did deliberate a bit on the tires, and we went with some super heavy-duty tires with super heavy-duty tubes. The tubes will be the 1 expense that I’ll spring for as some of those remote areas (see: Avalanches, etc could leave me a bit in the middle of nowhere if I were to get a flat. We rode Freaking Middle today and let me tell you, being 40 miles from a 7-11 in Taiwan is the true meaning of that. The trail in Allamuchy is reported to have been named because it’s in the “freaking middle of nowhere”.

I spent a fair portion of the afternoon trying to snake a clogged drain in the house. The first floor tub drains really poorly so my step-father brought over the snake, and I managed to get the whole damn thing in and thought that maybe it did something, but in the end, it did squat which sucks because I think it may be further along, as in the main drain which goes outside of the foundation and into the yard. Whatever, this problem can wait until we get back.

Jim later tagged me in this pic on Facebook. This is a bit of a worn pulley:

165743_1803216159729_1219601641_2168833_406100_n.jpg

I sent him a text and asked if there was more wrong with it other than the pulley. He said, “You’re gonna die. Can I have your cross bike if you don’t make it back?” After a bit of back and forth I said that yes, he can, as long as it’s not because of brake failure. If I get caught in the Avalanche, etc then the bike is all his. He may need to buy some high heels to make that frame work for him though.

I then watched the Jets win in dramatic fashion which was kinda cool. Funny that I grew up a Cowboys fan but gave up football for a while. Now I find myself rooting for the Jets I think mostly because my step-father is a fan. It may have something to do with the beer, but I now find that rooting with my step-father is more enjoyable than when I was a kid laughing at him when the Jets were awful and Dallas was always good.

Tomorrow I’m going into the city for the last time until February 14th, which is kinda of a long-ass time. This week I’m riding my bike somewhere, maybe With Matty on Wednesday. I took Thursday and Friday off and I think I’m going cosmos epic on Thursday. Nat & Julia are gone all day so if you’re free (looking at you Young Rob) shoot me some love because maybe we can take this one to 11. Maybe Utah on Friday as he has off. Plans are being made as we speak.

Garmin link is busted.

You looked very akward initially; using too much body english getting thru some rocky areas. It seemed like once we started moving the pace up you were better. The final downhill was very good; I did have to push hard to stay attached. Man you had some stinky gas.😱

All the bolds should spell something out.

You are onto something Jeremy.

What do we really know about Norm????

While Norm may appear to be a mild mannered cyclist who's blogs have both entertained and enlightened us with tales of training and other bi-wheeled exploits, what we have failed to realize is that all of his actions leading up to now, while disguised as random, were all part of a masterful plot set in motion century's ago! Everything he has said and done has all been leading up to this moment!! This is what he has been preparing us for!!!

He would have us believe that this trip is nothing more that a familial excursion - when it is really a quest for knowledge to the other side of the world!!!!

Along his quest, Norm will have revealed to him a mystical incantation thought lost for the better part of the last century which he will encode within the bold text of this blog. This ancient text yields unbridled riding prowess & grace, once cited on the eleventh minute of the second hour of the eleventh day of the second month of the first year of the second decade every 100 years... that day is 2:11am February 11th, 2011

There can only be one... I will be following... Will You?!?

Here's another awesome part of your death Taiwan bike. The brake cable guides have decided they no longer wish to be part of your frame. I should be riding a sweet new FTB in about what? 6 weeks and 9 days? 😉

You feeling alright Lou? Too much celebrating after the Giants win? Or maybe wathing the The Last Airbender for the 10th time has skewed your perception of reality. norm is just going there to hang out with his wife, bike and kid at 7 11 for 6 weeks. Don't read too much into it.

it's been a rough week and I was bored...

Dude that bike is the perfect choice for this trip. Its needs a bit of personality though. As I suggested on FB, get a sharpie and write "SEVEN" on the frame. People in taiwan probably dont want a POS american made bike 🙂

I think its this blog that helps us carry on when were tired and want to throw in the towel. I felt mattys pain, I have been there on ride with you and bill a few times. But after the Mahlon death march and seeing how I was thrown right under the wheels for deciding to break off and head to Tims house early....(only to be saved by you knocking yourself out)...I will ride until death now to aviod the public humiliation of DNF'ing 🙂 Actually, thats probably not true, I just come far more prepared now than I did that day.

Monday December 20th

Wow, Christmas is 5 days away and Taiwan is 9 days away. Today is my last day in the office and as much as I want to say something sappy like, “I’m going to miss this old gal,” let me go ahead and correct that misperception and say, I won’t.

Rob texted me a feew days ago first saying he didn’t understand the bold words, to which I replied that they were keywords. He then replied and said he still didn’t understand. Sometimes I really think I’m talking to a texting cat.

I did not ride today. I think today and Christmas may be the only days I don’t ride until he 30th. I will be fully in transit that day, so a ride is pretty much impossible.

Ok, I need to throw in the towel, at least for now. It’s 3:26 pm, and those 3 shit paragraphs above are all I got. I had to submit 2 expense reports today, as well as go to the Taiwanese visa and soup nazi office today to pipck up our visas. Long story short, this was trip #3 but I finally got all 3 of them. It was a real pain in the ass let me tell you. I’m going home where I have to watch Julia tonight. Lesson #17 in parenthood: Long day = lots of TV and as much ice cream as the little squat can handle.

Ok, I’ll try again after the break.

Anyway, does Lou think I have that much free time that I can nest riddles in my posts every day? Who do you think I am, Dan Brown? So I’m home now and I was half-tempted to try and spell something out with the bold words and give some advice on how to be a better biker. Let me make it real obvious, eat less butter, ride more. That’s my Ancient Chinese Secret. Not sure why the link yesterday didn’t work.

Is this better Bill?

Actually Bill you made that comment on Cardiac Bypass which isn’t terribly rocky. I remember specifically being out of the saddle a few times trying to miss the trees, which seemed to be jumping in my way which was really obnoxious. I find I use a lot more body English when I can’t keep the goddamn bike pointed in the right direction. I did get better but I also realize that I need to spend more time in the saddle of the mtb in 2011 is I want to really pump up the volume, or the jam.

Pearl, that video was just odd. I mean my man has some skills but other times you can tell he’s just barely keeping shit together. Props on the dice though, that was nice. The bike trick was iffy.

Lou, just for you I’ll try to keep that date/time in mind. Other than that I can’t promise anything. However, if you have specific requests about Taiwan, by all means let me know and I’ll try to entertain. Kevin not Kev has already requested some food info, which I’ll be happy to talk about. You’re not going to get the full effect of stinky tofu, but I’ll do that one at some point. Most Chinese are shocked when they find out I eat that stuff.

Jim does point out that the cable guides aren’t in good shape, but they’ve been like that more or less for at least 5 years and haven’t gotten any worse. See now the question becomes, is Jim nefarious enough to send someone over a ravine to get a free bike? Without question, the answer is yes. But I don’t think he’d make it quite so obvious as this. However, if Jim knows anything about Taiwan he fully well knows the drivers are probably 2000 times more likely to be my demise than the frame (or associated parts) failing.

We’ll see how well this blog works on Thursday and Friday, as Utah has agreed to ride both days, something like 7 hours total. Looks like we have Rob, Utah, Kirt, and maybe Iggy for Thursday, and Utah and Ilya and maybe Bill for Friday. Guess I better clue the wife in on these plans.

Tomorrow I’m going to wake up and see. I know I said Chimney Rock but I’m not sure I’ll make it though the weekend if I ride the mtb 6 rides in a row. Then again, maybe I will.

Norm maybe you should take a hint from Little Orphan Annie...

I find it hard to believe that you can't find a bike over there, Giant only pumps out 4 billion a year. You should swing by the manufacturing plant and swift through the garbage. I'm sure you can find what you need. I say while you are there you should bring your own schematics for a bike line and join in the pleasures of Customer Service in the bike industry...

this morning i had ideas of going through every one of your posts and pulling out the bolded words to see if there was some meaning to them. after fifteen words i realized that you're no dan brown and quit.

I'm almost embarrassed to say I am. Almost. It's a nice bike. Can't blame me, I'm only human😀

Thank you for fixing the link. I cannot get my ride into GC. I tried manual, new ride upload, moved to hard disk, reparsing with an xml editor. Still no luck. I have no open tracks, everything looks fine in xml, yet GC still refuses to take it.

So when you bold, do write everything then go back and add the bold, or do it on the fly?
