I get to post during my "private" time and during boring conference calls. Besides what ever I don't finish is only being postponed.

Tuesday December 21st

So Bill wants me to encode strange messages, but I’m not going to get to it today because I’m busy as hell again. I think every day from now until next Wednesday is going to be frantic. So Ovaltine jokes will be left to Bill, who did indeed take you all to the wood shed by at least 12 hours on that one.

I had every intention of watching the eclipse last night, but I was going to do it organically, which basically means I would tell myself that I wanted to wake up around 3:00 to pee, and check it out. It’s not a stretch, since I wake up several times every night to pee. Well lo and behold last night I closed my eyes and only woke up just after 5:00 am. Oh well, I guess I can wait another 450 years for the next winter solstice full lunar eclipse.

My FIL proved much more competent than my BIL thus far. Aside from finding a 56 road bike, he has found a race team’s group ride that gets together every Sunday at 1:30 pm. The team leader speaks English as he studied in Australia. It’s an 80k “race” that they do every week, which may really just be a group ride. My hunch is that I will show up and either obliterate them or be completely obliterated myself. Either way it’s something.

The thermometer said 37 today but when I got out there it felt like about 10. The wind was brutal and piercing. I headed to the shop to drop off some pulleys and old 105 brake sets. I also took a look at Pearl’s cross bike which I need to pick up soon. I took a look at Can O’ Beans and I have to say, Jim is making it pretty reliable. After coming down the hill to the shop on the cross bike, I grabbed the brakes on that and was pleasantly surprised about how solid they felt.

After that I embarked on my first actual “training” ride of the 2011 season. Yeah, it’s that time already. I’m going to wind out this week with mountain bike rides and Christmas ham but the next 3 days should find me on dirt, all Allamuchy dirt to be precise. Tomorrow is a strict SSP ride with MattyB, Kirt, and young Rob. I think old Rob expressed interest but I have no idea where he stands.

So anyway, today was 75 minutes in tempo, and I did it using RPE and HR, which wasn’t so bad or anything. Looking at some of the old files, I may have been running a little hot on that set, which would explain why I was a little tired at the end. Ah, the pitfalls of training without power. The ride link is here. Nothing really of note.

Oh, to answer Bill’s question I just type the BB code needed for bold, italics, urls, and images as I go. I find it easier that way.

On Matty’s comment about finding a bike there. I’m sure I can but you have to understand when a whitey shows up in any shop their eyes roll back with dollar signs. Everything would cost me more, and I don’t want to spend anything as it is. The Trek will probably cost $150 or so to get there. It’s much cheaper that way.

Back to Bill, I would suggest turning the GPS on, holding the lap button to start a new ride, then turning it off and trying again. If you turn it off without stopping it sometimes that happens. Or maybe you just suck.

Jim sent me a picture of Can O’ Beans, which is now ready for action. He took it out around the block and didn’t die, so I think I’m all set. I want to try and ride it a bit before I go just to make sure nothing obvious doesn’t work. But in all, it appears to be good enough for the task at hand. I have to admit that now I’m flip-flopping on bringing power at all. Not real thrilled about bringing the blingy wheel when it holds water and it always rains over there. Ilya says my OCD will consume me if I leave it here. He may be right, but in a country of Buddhism maybe I should try to do some serious bike meditation while I’m there.

Registered for my 3rd race of 2011 today, Battenkill. I’m in on the 2 Darkhorse events plus this. Add in The Freedom Tour and those will be 4 of my bigger targets of 2011. We have myself, Freddie, Ilya, and Bill in the cat 4 class, as well as JimV and Eric O. Fred says the promoters will group the 4 of us together. Jim and Eric will need to email them if they get put in another group want in on our nonsense.

That was going to be all but I now see there are no pictures. So I give you this from the start of last year's Battenkill race:

Getting up in the middle of the night to witness some cosmic event always sounds more tempting before you actually go to bed.

I hear it looked like this.

Norm, in the 4s you will be grouped by team. So if all of you are Cat 4 you should have no worries. If for some reason they miss one of you just let them know and they will re-arrange things for you, they are very good about that. We have about 4 Knapps guys racing in the 4s as well, plus a few guys in various Cat 5 categories. NickDavid is our lone 3 racing. Hopefully I can rack enough points up for 3 this year so I can join him next season. My stamina and leg strength are finally coming back to me on the TT bike at least. Its good to feel that this far out before the season starts.

Wednesday December 22nd

These posts are going to get later and later because we’re going to start pre-loading our fight against jetlag. Julia is already sleeping past 10:00 which is 11:00 pm in Taiwan. Next Tuesday that more or less means I’ll be up until about 3:00. We hope to stay up until we hit Alaska which is where the layover is. Then we’ll sleep on the second leg and wake up when we land, Friday morning in Taiwan. Goodbye Thursday.

Hit up Stephens State Park today and the frost heave sucked. Had a good group with MattyB, Young Rob, and surprise guests Jeremy and Jake. Kirt and Old Rob had to bail due to sick children. The ride link.

We did try the beat my time loop as a 3 man team, myself, Rob, and Jeremy. We sucked and it was damn hard, both because of the frost heave. My HR was 183, which is my cross race pace and I felt like I was barely moving at times. When we stopped both Rob & Jeremy agreed, that was damn hard.

On a training note, today’s workout was supposed to be 4x10 in threshold. I wanted to ride with people instead, and with the 21 minute TT loop, I ended up with 46 total minutes in L4/L5, which is close enough. Like I said to Ilya the other day, I’m not ready for formal training yet. He made mention of the trainer, which I cited as a Cookie Defense System only.

I went OTB on some ice and slammed the RD down, and after that it worked poorly. And of course the thing has been squeaking like a rusty bedspring for a while now. So a trip to the shop was in order before the day was out.

But first, I needed to unlock my iPhone, which turned out to be reasonably easy. Well, I thought so but Nat brought it to a T-Mobile place and one of the workers tried his SIM card in it with no luck. So we’re still sorting it out. The real problem here is that I need to be able to provide quality entertainment to everyone while we’re out in the field. Well, it would also be nice to have a phone while we’re out there. I guess it’s not the end of the world but my Facebooking is going to suffer for sure.

I eventually went to the shop where Jim fixed the RD which had been tweaked. The one screw had been bonked and he had to space the RD out from the cassette. He also put this stuff called ”lube” on the chain. And some of the Avid brake mount bolts. And the dropouts. And the cables. I also swapped out the Crank Brothers skewers for the normal Mavic ones. So, I love CB, but there’s a reason those skewers were not offered anymore this year. The bike no longer creaks and is ready to go again tomorrow.

I ended up taking home the orange geared bike, Can O’ Beans, my bag of random parts, and the PT wheel. I’m still not sure if I want to take that with me. If I use it I need to use the carbon brake pads so I’ll need to swap them out when I want to use it. But if I bring it, will I ever not use it?

I later went back and got the Sir 1x9 and Pearl’s new cross bike. Yes, at one point today I had 4 bikes and a wheel at the shop. I need to make sure Can O’ Beans is setup right. Not sure that stem is long enough.

Today I was just a headless chicken. I felt like I was running around all day, non-stop. For the next 7 days, this is life. I finally solved the second work drama of the week today in between all of this stuff. I won’t lie though, I didn’t work a whole lot today.

Tomorrow is the 4 hour, 4 park Mooch ride. Me, young Rob, Utah, Kirt, Iggy, Ben, Fred, and Weber with Jeremy possible. Yes, you read that right. I have most of tomorrow to do whatever I want so we’re going for a big mountain bike ride. If we make it to 4 hours this will be 8 hours of Allamuchy in 5 days. We plan to go back Friday as well for a Gilligan Tour of 3 hours to bring it up to 11 hours in 6 days. Young Rob plan to make both days and has made the first 2.

No pics again today so I’ll post up one of Capers, Colin, Pearl, and I hanging out:

great riding with you today, and i'm stoked to have been part of your farewell tour.

next time, don't try to follow 120 lb young rob over 1/8" of ice and you'll be a-ok.
