Moon Shadows are Evil

Yes, it is my wife's friend and also my "ex". We weren't really serious but we did our share of "fooling around". The ex was better looking before, she has since pushed out two kids and the extra weight just stayed, but that all goes out the door in the case of a threesome. But I ain't gonna lead you on, it ain't happening.

i need to read that last part of your posts more carefully. there is always a gem in there.

do you ride with one of those walz caps? i have been looking at those but are they a solid option for the 30-40s with the ear flaps? the are super pimp-tastic. well, as super pimp-tastic as a ghey cycling hat can be, anyway.

Good luck with the surgery, sucks as you were going to have your breakthrough season.

I pretty much only wear a cap when it is raining or the one castelli winter hat I have has the flaps, so sometime I just wear that to be cool. below 45* i wear a skull cap and have a a few diffrent thicknesses, but the walz caps with the flaps look good!

yeah, well, maybe. it all depends on recovery and in truth, what exactly they find in there. i already know there is LOTS of scar tissue so we'll see.

re. the caps, i only have a PI head condom thingy which is ok but totally lacks any sort of style. not to mention it rides up on my head and makes my ears cold. as soon as i find something to measure my head with i'll order. now the question is herringbone or hounds tooth...

Good luck with the surgery Jake. I was hoping it wasnt anything

thanks dusty, i appreciate it. i'm looking forward to the SSaP this year...hopefully i'll be doing it. it's fun riding with you. especially cross. 😀

Damn Jake, good luck.

Kev, good luck on the threesome😀

thanks wall-e...and i echo you're atta boy to kev.

Jake you may have seen me in my only cx race ever. If you don't do SSaP I will dedicate my effort to you. Real talk I am going to try to win but I'm not betting on it...

During yesterday's ride I was thinking of this thread.

Winds were out of the north-west at 15mph and projected to change to westerly during the day. I did the straightest route to Frenchtown. Tried to hide in the trees. I intentionally hit more climbs because hills block the wind and the effects of the wind lessen when you are going slower. In some places, I was out in the open. I got aero and dealt with what I could not avoid.

I stopped for the first time in Frenchtown and refilled bottles. I then turned south and threw up my sail. Whew-Hoo could be heard as I rode down Rt 29 for 40 minutes. I continued to take more open county roads going in a south easterly direction towards Princeton. I arrive there around 5pm. The winds had lessened by then and I continued home towards the south.

This is the route:

I hit my lap button as I left Frenchtown. Here are the splits between laps.

Here is the important part. During the return portion of the ride, I was 2 mph faster and my power was lower. In English, I went faster with less effort.

This is what I call an epic ride. Nice roads, good views, interesting towns, convenience stores to refuel, little traffic, 47 miles of tailwinds.

Nice ben, that is my favorite area to ride and now i don't have to post about my lowely 2 hours ride yesterday. Bonus!

Especially considering the temps. Thats a long ass cold weather ride.

What do you wear on your feet for that kind of time in the cold Ben? Chemical warmers?

Oh, I have fully acclimiated to the cold (just in time for Spring 🙄). I was wearing my summer-weight Halter's Polka-gyle kit. A long-sleeve base layer with arm-warmers over the sleeves. Windstopper vest to keep the wind off the torso. Then leg-warmers with booties over my road shoes. Skull-cap under my helmet. I brought two pairs of gloves. One for 30's the other for 40's. The zipper on my vest became the body heat regulator. I had the clothing dialed for this ride.

Figures......

I have my clothing pretty much dialed in for any temp., but my toes go numb past the 2 hour mark on the road without some chemical assistance. Shimano winter shoes and woolie boolies are my usual cover.

With the training world aligning and producing two power driven blogs in one day, I feel I must post today to bring some balance to the force so we all start counting our pounds and comparing them to our power numbers. However, we all know that that won’t happen anytime soon since you may need to take out a second mortgage to obtain one of power thingies and considering that most people won’t drop the good on a good wheelset in general, we won’t have to worry about them taking over the world too soon. As for counting pounds, I myself am even guilty of such if stepping on a scale once every two, maybe one, week(s) counts. And even at that, I just make mental notes and would have done something if I went over the 10 lb mark even if it include cutting the fat off of myself similar to the screw ball in thinner. Eh, who am I to judge, I still ride 26” bikes.

To start, my cold this week progressed to thick yellow/greenish snot which generally had me feeling like crap. On Sunday I started getting post nasal drip again and by Sunday night I was coughing a bunch and slept like crap. I banished myself to the couch to maintain marital bliss. The snot got worse through Wednesday and I finally swallowed my pride and went to an ENT. No sinus infection but a full on cold and she gave me some prednisone and an antibiotic if the cold progresses into a sinus infection. As I sit her now, things seemed to have improved so hopefully I wont have to fill the antibiotic script.

Sunday
Set back in time a bit. On Sunday I did an easy ride, hit some dirt roads (which we in fantastic condition) and that was that. 2 hours and change. Didn’t feel great, didn’t feel bad, just a ride.

Monday
Saw just a commute on this day, which I rarely do. I bagged my typically 1+ morning ride because my head felt woozie as I think I OD on cough syrup.

Tuesday
Short ride in the evening and hit some of the canal. It was soft. Nothing worth posting about this ride.

Wednesday
I had planned on taking a half day to ride for the better part of the morning, probably would have been 5 hours, but my appointment at the ENT was at 11, so I bagged it and the deciding factor was that it was going to be in the mid teens through 8 am since riding in those temps is a whole different set of clothes and such and I decided to get a ride in during the afternoon.

Got on the bike alittle later than expected. Immediately I felt sluggish and the felts felt as if they had nothing to give. It was an awesome day out with light winds, however I would be heading directly into those winds for the first hour. Between the sluggish legs and the wind, I was hurting. It also dawned on me that I adjusted the rear bearing on my wheel the other day and had a feeling I made them too tight because it felt like I was pulling the rear wheel along. In any case, I felt like junk. Made my way to

15 HOUR PAUSE

sandy ridge and over to bryam-kingwood where I sunk faster than Dustin chasing Martin up Chimney Rock. Just could not shake the sluggish feeling. On a good note I turned my back towards the light wind, so at least I wouldn’t have to deal with that. My goal at this point was to take an easiest way home without going out of my way so eventually I just retraced my route for awhile and enjoys the long downhill on sandy ridge. Made my way over to NJ 31 and just cruised down that, however a few sections the shoulder, while 10’ wide, is completed covered with salt, rocks and debris and was more or less a dirt road. Outside of that, the last hour was ok. So all in all 3.5 hours and 58 miles, much shorter then I had originally planned.

As soon as I got home I took the rear wheel off and adjusted the bearing. This time I actually checked the wheel back on the bike, much better.

Thursday
I felt much better on Wednesday night but only commuted to work, which was the second time I did just a commute this week. Felt much better during the day although I am still hacking up all kinds of snot, but it is noticeably thinner, so am hoping a sinus infection stays away.

This Morning
Rain forecasted this morning and strong winds this afternoon had me thinking about ditching my ride today but I rode anyways. Have to say the light rain this morning was quite nice and I was dressed for appropriately. If you can minimize being cold, wear a cycling cap, avoid heavy traffic and dark combined with fog(had a little of that this morning) riding in the rain is soothing for the brain. However if you come up short even one of these thing, at least part of you ride may be miserable. Anyways, coming out of Princeton it rain pretty hard for 5 min which coincidently coincided with a 25+mph downhill section so in those couple of mins I got completely soaked. Other than that, made my typical Einstein stop and enjoyed a non-headwind the rest of the way to my office. Feel good this morning but legs are still kind of dead.

Weekend
Riding is up in the air tomorrow as I am going to visit my parents. A pre dawn ride could be had but I will see how I feel later. Who knows about Sunday but overall I am probably looking at around 37 hours for the month of February, which I am happy with.

i dont know if i could have enough gear to ride in this rain. maybe a bubble or something. kudos to you kevin.

For a rain ride, figure on dressing for 10* cooler than the outside temp. Norm gave me this advice and it works for the most part. Hands and feet are the hardest, you have the feet covered with the Lakes but hands may be an issue. However, clothing wise, it is no secret that I have an ass load of gear for pretty much any condtion above 0*

Nothing worse than being cold and wet...unless you add tired and hungry to it. A light rain on a warm summer day is one thing but a rain like today in the 40's forget it. See rule #5 and shove it

FTR Martin had one good day/easy ride (thanks to being protected for 60+ miles) on a road bike that day hahaha. Just saying.
