Moon Shadows are Evil

i call bs.

that is vanilla bean in the background and chocolate in the "pint of wasted potential". putting ice cream in that glass is like putting danica patrick in a nissa leaf.

that things screams 90 minute IPA.

by the way, chilly this morning, huh? i was way under dressed. for some dumb reason i went out for 25* weather (even though the thermometer said 11*) and after an hour and a half i was wayyyyy cold. fawking dummy.

It was slowed churned choc too, the vanilla ran out... Yeah, I don't have much use for a pint glass and I know the entire beer forum is making fun of me right now and the guys at dirt rag would have never sold it to me if they knew I never intend on it ever seeing a drip of beer. Good thing I could give a crap what you alcoholics think 😀

Yes, chilly morning. It was warmer here, but still in the teens. My hands were cold at the 45 min mark but I kinda of expected it. Only rode for just over an hour so it wasn't a big deal. Screw temps in the teens, aren't we done with that crap yet?

Cat 6 Days and Gnar Gnar Gnights

I thought about starting a new thread with the title above but thought the gnar gnar thing has worn alittle thin awhile ago and I really don’t talk that way, so it would really just for the sake of being obnoxious and I only like to be that way some of the time and mainly just when kush posts. However, it does have 3 Gn is there, so that is triple the gnar or 1.5 the gnar gnar, either way, there is plenty of Gn to go around. Anyways, moon shadows aren’t nearly as evil this time of year, so I am probably due to put this thread to rest.

Speaking of Gn, I finally got to shred some in the form of a lands that be sour ride. Orginally I had planned on riding there last Saturday when conditions up top would probably have been approach good but some friends gave us tickets to the Spiderman musical, so a afternoon and night in NYC was on tap, so the ride got canned. While the tickets were free, as most of you know, heading into the city nothing is free and you are always in store for dropping some coin. We ate at an excellent vegetarian restaurant where I dropped a chris king headset on dinner (the restaurant was in Williamsburg) but I must say, it was well worth the cost. The musical was ok but too my dismay none of the actors fell from the harnesses as they were flying over the audience. Boo. So the show was out late and then we grabbed dessert, so we didn’t make it home until close to 2 am. Not sure the last time I have been up that late.

So I peeled myself out of bed around 6 and headed to sourlands before the rain really hit. This was the maiden voyage for the trance x so I had high expectations. It was misting lightly, so I knew it would be slick. I decided to ride anyways since I knew the little bit of wet wasn’t going to change conditions up top much, but it would just be damn slippery on the rocks, which SL has just a handful. Straight up the gas line I went and I forgot how steep that is in sections, but much nicer with gears. Rode to the 3 amigos trail head and turn in. Within 2 seconds I remember how riding a FS is roughly 1000 times more comfortable than even my steel HT. Even at slow speeds, the thought of picking a line just goes out the window. It was slow going with the conditions, but I was having much fun regardless. I then looped back around and hit it backwards and was quickly reminded that gears make this place so much more enjoyable as the last couple times I rode here was with a 32 x 16. Had a feel comical dabs with the wet rocks but all was good. The new trail over to boulderama was alittle bit more wet, but I was not rutting or anything like that. The downhill out of boulderama was death with the large rocks not allowing any bit of traction. I walked a few sections because it just wasn’t worth trying. Then back up around and hit 3 amigos for the 3rd time. By this time it started pouring, so I packed it in and bombed the gas line. Opened her up alittle bit and enjoy the magic carpet ride of the fs. Maiden voyage of the trance x was complete and now I really can’t wait to ride her again, maybe next time it will be dry and I can mange more than 5 mph.

In the afternoon, my wife bailed on going out, so that ment double down sunday! It wasn't rainign when I went out, but that lasted for all of 10 min but had a tailwind for awhile and felt good. Hit some dirt and then came back. Felt good but was cold by the end because it was freaking pouring and I was wearing short sleeves although wool, which is amazing snuggly in the wet. The dirt roads in the pleasant valley area are in superb condition right now and should stay that way for the HOH.

Monday
Easy ride in, planned for about a half hour, ended up closer to an hour.

Tuesday
No morning ride as planned and the evening opened up for a solid 2 hour ride. Originally planned to ride some dirt, but bypassed all but a short section and replaced it with the climb up rocktown. Felt great and pushed it alittle bit here and there. Feels good to get some higher averages back in the mix, mainly because I can do longer routes in a shorter time. Flatted my front tubeless tire just as i turn into my developement and upong inspection, find there is a pinhole right wheere the sidewall meets the tread and if I pump it to above 60 psi, it is spraying stans everywhere. What good is stans if it can't fill a pinhole? Still felt good about this average, which makes me think twice about riding at 15 mph for the HOH considering these are some of the same roads / hills. We will see…

Wed
Hour ride in, nothing special with a different route then I would normal take through Princeton.

The ride home yesterday was great, with a tailwind almost the whole way. There is a section of 4 lights over maybe a mile and a half where I can sometimes keep up with traffic. Yesterday was one of those days where I lose the cars between the lights and then pass them at the lights. It is always fun as people get so irritated, but ti is just so damn fun.

Today
I bailed on riding in because I didn’t feel like dealing with the rain and having a car today gave me the opportunity to do some errands at lunch to build up the MBU’s. So I woke up at 6, got ready and thought it seemed awfully dark out and after coming downstairs, realized I got up at 5, not 6 and my clock was an hour ahead. WTF. I thought about riding but still just drove in. Boo for me.

Dropped a Chris King headset on dinner. That's a funny way to put it...I did that Sunday in NYC with my girlfriend, if we didn't have any beers it would have been a $60 dinner before tax and tip. We had beers and doubled that number...it's worth showing the girl a nice night out considering she give me zero shit about anything

so what is your honest opinion about that spidey play? Very interested in it from the get go before all the media took over about the mishaps. Last night I saw on the news that they get a new directory, production crew, and doing a rewrite.

I saw that on the PIX11 news in the morning. And they are pushing it back until early summer

19+ mph for that amount of elevation in that amount of time is too fast. I hope u stick back with the mortals for at least a little while.

Yeah, I am horrible at reviewing that type of stuff but I can say it was entertaining. The general story basic covers the first two movies but the villan in the second half is the incarnation of the spirit of the spider that bite him or something crap like that. Alittle far fetched, even form a comic book perspective. The arcobatics are cool to watch. We were the second row in the balcony, right next to a platform the actors land on, so it was cool because "spidey" would land right beside us. I will leave my review as "entertaining".

I ride a version of this loop pretty often and I know from expereince that this is one of the faster averages I had had for that area. I did have a tailwind for the first miles approaching the hills. Typically I am around 18.5 consistently on a "spirited" ride in that area. With the dirt roads, alitlle slower when the road points up.

Back to the dark

As norm mentioned, I do not care much for this daylight saving business and was very much enjoying daylight in the mornings and the sun actual being up in the sky when I was getting was rolling into work around 7. But as with many good things, they never last, but at least in this case, if the definition of good is riding in the morning sans light, then good days are not far off and even better days of starting at 5am with no lights is even closer. Really though, the earliest it was light was around 5:50 so in almost all cases I was starting with lights anyways so really, what does it matter. The days gets longer for the next 3 months so that’s something to look forward. Glass half full kinda stuff.

So in celebration of the impending darkness, I didn’t ride on Saturday. I could have in the morning but was hoping for an early afternoon ride but my wife called nap time dibs, so it didn’t happen. I had had 9.5 hours up until that point, so it isn’t like I didn’t ride last week, so whatever. I took a nap and worked on the bike a bit.

On Sunday the nap time ride did work out and I headed north west. Yes, directly into the wind, which sucked for sure, but I get tired of that other direction (really there are only two directions from my house since anything south and east pretty much suck balls, so north west or east are my options). I started with a cycling cap as I thought my melon might get chilly but ditched it because it was bothering me a few miles in. A mile later I realized I did not have my sun glasses and turned around to make sure I didn’t drop them on the road. Didn’t see anything so hoped they were at home as I really never take them off of the helmet I was wearing. Literally never, not even to wear them riding, they just stay stuck in my helmet because it is cool to stick them there. So after that little setback, I tried to hide in the trees alittle bit but without much success. So I cruise down into Lambertville and decided to ride the beginning of the HOH route as the dirt roads should be in perfect condition and I was right. The gutter on lakeview was super, super fast and smooth. Ok, maybe super fast is up to me, but it felt fast. I look back at one point and see a rider behind me, but I never saw him again. I cruised over to Hunter Rd, which I never ride and found the dirt section to be quite nice and there ia a great few of PA along there but when you get to the bottom it is soft and muddy with larger rocks in between. There will be at least one crash and some flat tires in this area. So now I remember why I don’t ride this road, because the bottom sucks. Open hitting pavement on pleasant valley road, I felt like a rocket on the pavement after riding through the muck. The last two dirt sections I ride normally and they were in good condition. The climb on the third dirt section is short but tough. It was the only time on this ride I dropped to the little ring since my cadence was in the 40’s and it really wasn’t worth it to churn along like that. On 518 picked up a good tailwind and cruised down to the last dirt of the day. Man is it fun transferring from pavement to dirt at 35 mph.

The rest of the ride was a mix of tailwind and mostly flatness (see chart below). So just before MP 20 and ending at MP 37 is the first 17 miles of HOH. From where I turned off the route, it is still a few miles before the next dirt section and then a bunch of miles before the one after that, so see, nothing to be worried about, that is unless you don’t know how to ride on dirt and can’t climb little short climbs well, because then you are fooked. Just kidding. No, seriously. 😉

Monday
So back to the dark. Did my easy morning loop and about half way through realized I could make a 20 mph average and put down the hammer a bit to do so. Just made it in at 20. A couple of hard efforts which felt good after they were done. Nothing much else besides that. Grabbed my bag and headed to work after that. Will probably ride at lunch but just to the bank and back and maybe a few more miles.
