IGVENTURE

Jamie driving would be pretty funny. I remember when I was 14 my father bought a honda 250R 3 wheeler and on one of our trips 2hrs into the dessert he flipped it and dislocated his shoulder. He tossed me the keys and had me drive his pick up truck the entire way back to the hospital in salt lake city...Freeway and all. By then I knew how to drive pretty well so it wasn't a huge deal. Why everyone should know how to operate a manual transmission though.

Probably not something that would interest you guys, but just outside of columbus (which may be on the way depending on how you are going) is the ama motorcycle hall of fame. Some cool stuff in there. Even one of Neil Pert's bikes and one of his drumsets 🙂

Have a fun trip man...Looking forward to the recap

Cincinnati Recap

My younger son Jamie is a a big sports fan. His favorite football team is the Bengals, I'm not sure how this happened. Well I wanted to do something cool so I came up with this idea to drive to Cincinnati and hit up a Pirates game on the way home.

I rented a car for this one. My car just hit 300,000 miles this week and the thought of being broken on the side of the road was not appealing. The car rental place gave me a Honda Accord, actually I picked this car. The gray paint job was the low key color I was looking for to fly under the radar of the cops as I'm doing 80mph down the highway.

We hit some traffic on the way down and got nailed with torrential downpours but other then that the ride was smooth. We got to the hotel at 6:30, threw our bags down and took the shuttle in front of the hotel to the game. It was only 2 miles away.

The stadium itself was not real impressive, it struck me as low budget. The food was crap and the beer selection poor. They did have Who-Dey, which they really embrace, its even the name of there mascot.

The Bengals won but the pre-season game was not real competitive. I am not a big football fan, I was checking out the cheerleaders more then the game. When we were leaving the stadium Jamie saw Ian Eagle in a car leaving the stadium as we walked past. Eagle is a football announcer and Nets announcer. I had no idea who this guy was but I told Jamie afterwards that you gotta call it out when you see someone like this. Now that J is 14 I have to teach him how to be a guy. Jamie told me he had his windows up so he wouldn't have heard him. I told him you gotta yell it so loud that he would hear it with the windows rolled up. This is what guys do.

Our hotel was right across the Ohio River, me and J walked back over the bridge to Kentucky. A friend who knows the area gave me a good tip when he told me to stay in Kentucky. Where we stayed had more fun places to walk around and eat. We stayed in the town of Covington, located right along the river. It was a lot like a mini New Hope...a mecca for tourists, bikers, gays, newlyweds, artists, iggies...

Saturday me and J woke up late and walked over to the village to have breakfast then headed out to play golf. 9 holes was enough for us, we play golf once a year and that is plenty. In the afternoon we walked along the Cincinnati waterfront in between the Bengals Stadium and the Reds baseball park. Its so cool to have two stadiums within a 1/2 mile of each other. Unfortunately the Reds were on the road when we were there. The water front also had artwork depicting events in the area during the Civil War.

Despite the rich history in the area and the great access to sports teams Cincinnati is still a city with vice. One of the things I thought was wrong in Ohio is the ability to walk into a CVS and buy alcohol. They even had a plastic display, like the ones that sell rubber balls, near the register where you could buy little bottles of booze. Some of the people I seen walking around that city look like they need to put the bottle down.

Speaking of alcohol I had two really good porters with dinner Saturday night. I started out with the Breckenridge vanilla porter. This was smooth with a vanilla finish. Next I went with Flying Dog Gonzo Porter, this was killer. Full bodied and deep long finish. At over 9% alcohol I only had one 8oz. glass...but that was enough.

We got back to the room and flipped around the channels and I found Caddyshack on...awesome. I made Jamie watch it, which was revealing for him. He discovered that all my lines are taken from this movie...he questioned my ability to come up with original material. I simply told him Caddyshack is a classic and you have to know these lines...this is what guys do.

Sunday we checked out of our hotel and motored east toward Pittsburgh. Roads are nice early in the morning, not a lot of traffic. I made it to PNC park in 4 hrs. The stadium was awesome, well layed out and good food & beer. I got a killer pulled pork sandwich topped with two pierogies in a pretzel bun and washed it down with a Sam Adams Octoberfest. The stadium is located on the Alleghany river with the Pittsburgh skyline in the background. Me and J got there early and walked around the whole park, there was not a bad seat in the house. The game was great, the pirates exploded in the 4th with a grand slam and then some. They went on to win 11-5.

We hit the road at 4:30 and I did the best I could to motor along at 80mph, J did a great job navigating while I drove. The two lane hwy's are frustrating when trucks clog up the left lane. A truck carrying a full load will stay in the right lane but an empty trucker will hop in the left lane to do 65mph....ahhhhhhhhhhhh. Get the fuck out of my way, please. I make a commitment to speed, I set my cruise control to 80mph and don't use my brakes unless someone gets in my way. Most people will speed when they feel like it, by pressing on the gas downhill or on flat straight runs. Like I said I set my cruise control to 80, so I just have to worry about steering. I've had easier times passing entire cat 2 fields then I have passing cars in the left lane. Keep right pass left. Jamie heard me curse trucks and Toyota Prius's...this is what guys do.

That Stadium was one of the 1st newer football stadiums built. They built it do the fans are on top of the field and it's loud. Same in Baltimore...I went for a Titans game and in 3rd downs the crowd sounded like white noise.

pnc park does look beautiful. one of these days i need to put a road trip together to western pa.

Yes!

Looks like it was an awesome trip.

Great road trip idea and recap, that's what guys do!🙂 Was it a player connection with the Bengals... ocho cinco or carson palmer or just the uniforms? He's too young to remember the iggy shuffle, right?😉

He's never really told me but I think its player connection. His favorite Bengal was Cedric Benson, but now he's on the Packers. He's too much of a real sports fan to like a team for uniforms...this is something I would do.

ha...iggy shuffle.

why listen to the radio when you can watch sports center. he would rather watch this before school then eat breakfast.

When J ran my fantasy football team last year we only lost 1 game.

Carlton???? you know even less about sports then I do.

I am currently watching Boomer and Carton on MSG right now eating breakfast. I have comcast and they are on ch 196...

PNC Park has some ofthe best food of any park in the majors.

You were right to fly under the radar out there, too: I once got shaken down by a local cop in Western PA while drving out to Dayton to pick up my brother from college. He told me I had to pay the ticket right away or he'd have to hold me because I "lived too far outside the jurisdiction." Total crock of sh*t, and I knew it, but I wasn't about to argue with what was essentially an armed robber at 1 in the morning so I paid him and left. I was going to ask for a receipt but I actually kind of liked my head without a billy-club dent in it.

So, yeah, be careful driving out in Western PA.

The thing about those sports talks shows is that they beat a topic to death...imo. but for people who can't get enough sports then it serves a purpose. Sports Center is more factual info, while Boomer and Carton are sports with their spin on it.

1speed, I was on the lookout for the man. These cops were not at sneaky as the ones on the NY Thruway, those guys hide behind bridge overpasses. The Pa & Ohio troopers park on the median and just wait for you. Luckily I was able to see them in time to back off the speed.

Its a weird part of the bike season right now for me. I don't quite know what to do with myself. The beginning of the season I had my races lined up and it was easier to get motivated to train. With Battenkill on the horizon as well as SSAP, Bearscat and a bunch of other races, I was eager to do well and work hard. Now as we approach September I'm like, meh...to training. I am still riding hard (kinda) but I only have a couple more races left this year and Cathedral Pines is not until late November.

Last week after the Tuesday Norm ride I became even more confused as to what I am doing for races over the next few months. Bill was rattling off mtb races I've never heard of while Eric was filling my head with cross racing and even offered me a bike to try. I want to check out the cx thing, it seems like so much fun. I would still train distance for CP but throw in some cx races for intensity. Even If I suck at it I can party naked and throw out the vibe.

Ok, things are starting to get clearer. Let me fill you in on some rides I've done over the last week.

Tuesday was the Norm ride... some hard efforts followed by strava talk and cx discussion while Utah fried his cheese.

Thursday http://connect.garmin.com/activity/212017150 This was my tempo ride to Belmar, yes riding to a beach to see girls in bikini's can provide motivation to train. Is this wrong?

I almost got taken out by a car on 71, down the road from Brielle Cycle. As I was doing 22mph a car came across an intersection right in front of me with no intention of stopping. I grabbed some breaks and steered it parallel with the car so I didn't end up on the hood. As I circled the car with my death stare at the driver I said you nearly killed me. The women in the drivers seat replied I'm sorry I didn't see you. At this point two little kids peeked out from the back of the car window, not wanting to create more of a scene I just shook my head and moved on.

As I pedalled down the road thinking to myself, I wondered how she could have missed my orange jersey. Even though I was pissed the driver was hot, which I must say helped diffuse the situation. If it was some dude in that car I probably would have stood there and cursed him out for a couple minutes. In any case I know its always more risky doing tempo rides near densely populated areas like this so I always am on the defense and ready to flip the bird.

Saturday http://connect.garmin.com/activity/212017124 This ended up being just under 50 miles but really liked this loop. I've been on these roads before but this was the first time I put this together in one ride. To mix up the training I kept it in the big ring to work my legs harder. I never thought I would be able to rock the bigger gear but felt like Utah chugging up the climbs, mashing away at the pedals.

Sunday Met up with bearded Mike and crew at Allaire after work. I saw the regulars there, Mike no beard, Tracy, Garry, Arwin's, Hub, Paul...

We cleaned out nicks on the glass trail as well as removed sand deposits along the trail. The bees attacked us, Hub's finger swelled up, then his hand followed by his arm. He was looking pretty puffy when he left, hopefully he deflated. Despite the bee stings we still got in a ride afterwards. It was nice to ride a social pace with a group at Allaire, I usually kill myself solo when I go there and break something.

Before we went out to ride we saw Ed & Pat in the parking lot on there tandem. This always amazes me when I see this, not just because tandems are interesting looking and somewhat rare. But more so for the fact that a married couple can ride those things. I love my wife but for me part of the joy of cycling is to get away from her. I've been married 18yrs so I'm allowed to say this. When I see these two on a tandem I always think dam...true love.

Tandems... My wife and I lasted about five minutes in a two person kayak last week before we started arguing. I can't even imagine a tandem bike!

This stuff really happens?? Boggles the mind.
