Commuting

I might start up when I pick up my road bike from Halters, short ride though. Only 3 miles one way, but I could take the long way but I'm a little leary of 206 in Hillsborough during rush hour.

it is scary enough just crossing it around then....
should get some relief when the bypass goes in - maybe get a bike lane.

1/2 day of school in branchburg - some young kid is going for a bike ride this afternoon....

my theory is if you do it everyday they will eventually start looking out for you.... I think.... 🙄

Jealous of robin's double track. Great job!

I'm 7 bikedays for 9 workdays since I started 🙂
see how the weather plays out next few days but not looking good

I'm considering it, too. From home to work in piscataway it's 16 miles (avoiding 287). River road will be the worst of it. How do you guys handle laptops? I always take mine home at night. Carry in a backpack with clothes?

I've never carried my laptop in but wouldn't hesitate to do so. A backpack or panniers (there are plenty that have laptop slots) would be the way to go. If its light enough and not a 17" beast it probably won't be too noticible to carry in a backpack.

My problem is bike storage while at work, the atmosphere in the building I work in is very hard on metal surfaces, aluminum etc, may have to store it in another part of the plant and trust my coworkers not to mess with it.

Bike storage for sure is one of the biggest obstacles when it comes to commuting. Poke/ask around, you might find some surprising options. Storage closets with extra space, parking garages sometimes have bike areas etc.

It runs along the railbed. Just before you hit the Bound Brook station there's a little shed of some sort, go across the CST tracks and you'll see a trail next to a billboard that'll put you onto the road just at the bridge in the BB Circle. It took me quite a while exploring every inch of that area to come up with this route 😀

Thanks for posting the pics and the description.

I jumped on the rail bed Saturday morning at the Dunellen station and road it to Mountain Ave in Middlesex. The gravel was really loose and not a lot of fun to ride (Although part of this might be attributed to riding Hartshorne in the morning) I did a dry run of my Bridgewater commute on my road bike Sunday morning by taking Rt 28 straight into Bridgewater and back. It clocked in at just over 22 miles round trip and it felt pretty good. I was all set to head out Monday morning and my deck thermometer said 23 degrees and the wind was blowing 15 mph so I punked out🙁

I'll head over to Bound Brook this weekend and check out the area you indicated. Hopefully the weather holds out and I can get started on my bike commute next week 🙂

really sucks. I should have and could have totally biked yesterday and today if I wasn't being fed this storm of the winter hype

Never trust a weatherperson besides unless an astroid is touching down their is mo excuse.

The issue with ignoring the weatherman is IF they close the GWB you are stuck on an island.

I thought about this today.
I once saw a guy biking the roadway across the bridge in the rain after they closed the ped paths for the night.
Did not look like fun.

Finderne avenue for those who know it has no shoulder and is very busy during rush hour, as all main roads are. There is a sidewalk that I've used with my mtb to get to work that has a few pretty uneven spots. Now on the mtb its not an issue but will these hurt a road bike if hit too hard?

learn to "ride light" - when you do teach me, cause i flat on just about everything on the 23c road tires -

Yeah- What fidodie said-
If your wheels aren't too lightweight, I'd give it a go.
Shift your weight to unweight the wheel that's going over the rough stuff.
Don't goon smash it at speed and you should be okay.
And you may get good at truing wheels in the bargain 😉
