the last 3 summers in a row I have been bit by bugs that required some medical assistance..

3 years ago I got bit by a spider (I think). I crashed on a wooden bridge at CR, laid on the ground for 10 minutes.. then 30 minutes later into the ride i got bit on the back by something. I grabbed at it through my jersey and felt it..but never actually saw it.
I had a huge itchy welt/rash thing. I OD'd on benedryl and it eventually went away.

2 years ago I was on my road bike and something bit me on the forearm. Not sure what it was, but It ended up getting infected and turned into dermatitis. My arm felt swelled up and felt like it was on fire. 2 weeks of antibiotics for that one.

Last year I was down in cape may on a family vacation and went for a road ride. Got a flat tire and had to change it on the side of the road. a deer tick hopped on for the rest of the ride and bit me in the thigh. Lyme's. 2 days a crazy flu symptoms, 7 days off the bikes, and 3 weeks of antibiotics.

Fuck bugs

Almost ran over a small northern black racer snake in the sourlands. Tried to catch him for a good pic but he zipped off into pickers

didnt see this while riding, but I was talking about riding.
found at work.
sorry for poor photo quality, stupid phone and couldnt get the little fella to quit moving for a pose.

Seems so impossible. I mean we've all seen black bears, they run away faster than chipmunks when they see you. How could this happen? ugh, that really sucks. getting eaten by a bear is the worst. They don't have the common decency to kill you first. They just start eating.

So this happened:

http://www.nj.com/passaic-county/index.ssf/2014/09/edison_man_22_found_dead_in_west_milford_after_bear_encounter.html#incart_hbx#incart_best-of

Not quite sure why five people hiking together would run away from a black bear. They must have had bacon in their back pockets.

I agree, if they just stuck together and stood their ground and got loud then nothing would have happened. By separating and running like prey in all directions it dictated their fate. Sad.

This is a crazy story, hope they do some investigating as to the circumstances. I have ran into more black bears then I can count in the past 5 years of riding, everyone of them has turned and run. Im wondering what these guys were doing.

I fish in the area where this happened, and I've seen lots of bear. One time I had to nail one in the nose with a big rock because he was getting a little too curious, but usually they don't pay me no nevermind. The problem is these guys split up and ran. They should have stayed together and held their ground. Its pretty much a universal fact that you should never run away from a bear, always try to hold your ground. The minute you run, you're percieved as prey.

It doesn't add up. There's got to be something more here like these dudes tying the guy to a tree and covering him in hamburger meat.

Ok so it sounds like we all agree that some sort of Darwin Award is deserved here.

There only time a bear has not run away from me is when Alaska Sean and I were riding in Mahlon and came upon a huge male who was sitting in the middle of the trail and refused to budge. So, we just walked around him and continued our ride.

Anyone catch the awesome Star Ledger lack of editing with the quote about "bears being most active after hibernation in the fall". WTF? - typical SL

Damn, crazy new day... So this also happened

That link no work bro.
