night riding

Riding alone

How many people ride by themselves at night?

For those who do ride alone, I recommend the "Road ID" app. It sends an email or message to folks to let them know your out riding and a link to a map of your location and track. If you exceed the alotted time or stop for more than 5 minutes (option) it sends out a notification. Be aware it only works for areas with cell coverage.

I would also recommend wearing bright colors, reflective aparrel, a whistle, sufficient lighting and the ability to identify your gps location. This is not an endorsement of riding where or when you shouldn't but anything you can do to avoid deploying SAR will help us all.

One of my favorite parts of riding at night is the wild life. Seeing a pair of glowing eyes ahead of you on the trail is pretty cool, and I once popped out of the woods near a baseball field and was about a foot from an owl perched on a post. He just looked at me and couldn't be bothered, but then a few minutes later, he flew by and led me down the trail for a bit. This time of year, you have ot be a little wary because there are a lot of young bucks running around and they can be aggressive if they're spooked. The mice might be the most distracting though -- there are a lot of them around and if they are all out scurrying around in the same area, when they run for cover when you pass, their rustling can freak you out because you just hear all this noise and can't see a thing.

I've never ridden Blue Marsh at night, but given how much wild life I see out there during the day, I think that would be a really cool place to ride at night if it were allowed.

We do do some pretty good sized group rides down south. Kresson and CCC are the usual spots.

I use this on every ride I do. I don't have the stop notification on. But I have the timer set for 4 hours as a default. I use it every day.

Also, I tried it in Mooch and the phone died because there's no reception.

Good to know -- never heard of the app.

Thanks!

I also have a bell attached to my hydration pack.

Anyone ride with music while riding?

Wow... you guys are hardcore.
I get freaked out even at a public football field when its dark and no one around.

I agree with Washington Crossing as well at Nesh over in PA as to being haunted. I tend to ride by myself at night more on the road than in the woods. I love riding in the woods more than anything but its better when you have a group.

I'm riding solo tonight. It does get a little freaky by yourself but it is also wicked fun. I have a knife hooked to my pack chest harness for just a little feeling of security.

"Night ride stories" would probably make a good thread.

Have any of you ever ridden without lights at night (off-road only, of course)? I occasionally do it just to see how far I can get -- sort of like a test of how "zen" I can be on the bike. (I would not recommend doing this after you've started out with lights, though -- if you're going to try it, try it from the start.) It's actually pretty easy to do in the winter if there is snow on the ground and a full moon. I've done that a few times when a wire on my light wouldn't connect properly (that seemed to happen sometimes in the cold with my one set of lights.) It can be a little slow going, but not too bad overall. With a full moon, there's enough moonlight to cause shadows that bring a lot of stuff into sharper relief and the snow reflecting the light can make everything look kind of faded but visible.

Also, I'm pretty awful at figuring out when to turn on my lights. I usually wait until it gets pretty hard to see to turn them on, and that's usually only because I see another rider out riding theirs on. But after I turn them on, I can't believe how dark it seems around me.

I did my first night ride last night, on trails that I had never ridden. It is awesome to be out on the trail alone, it is very quiet. It was slow going on the unfamiliar trails. But I ended up meeting some nice girls out for night ride that let me tag along. Turned out there was a good amount of riders out riding that night

i do it both off road and on the road. full moon on the road is cool in the morning. snow is without a doubt the best time.

i plan on trying night skiing this year if we get another dump at the sourlands. now that i have picked a couple lines, i think i can night it. only issue will be getting back - difficult when you have zero idea where the trail is. in the dark will add a little more 'adventure'

Did the group night ride at cranks around the campfire this year. Mooch is hard enough during the day but at night its just ridiculous and awesome at the same time.
