(No Longer) Offensive Strava Segment Name

I'm offended by the Chinese oppression of Budhist Tibetans.

Now that's "beef"

I would have to agree that state sponsored persecution of a minority group would outweigh the actions of an individual. Emile Durkheim's "Tyranny of the Majority" discusses the dangers of majority rule.

In an attempt to lighten the mood and with toungue firmly planted in cheek,
If Nat Geo is correct, the monks don't do a whole lot of flesh consumption. Soooo Spence, I'm not sure about the "beef" reference. 😉

Regardless of whether the thread produces the intended outcome of renaming the segment, I would just like to say that I think this thread was good and useful in several ways:

1: For those who thought that the term gangbang = gang rape, it might take the power and 'sting' away by knowing that others are likely using the term in the consensual fun-for-all-participants definition.

2: For those who thought that it means consensual (myself included), it is good to know that others might understand it by the rape definition, so may want to be more careful throwing the term around.

3: It reminded me of this inspirational song from my youth, which has been on replay in my head all weekend:

When I was youn-ger, and in my priiime,
I used to gang-bang all the tiiime.
But now I'm older, my hair is gray,
I only gang-bang once a daaay!

Its obvious that Strava is gender biased, I mean, doesn't the K in KOM stand for king? How sexist.

This thread reminds me of that Cheech and Chong skit.

Knock knock
whos there?
Tijuana
Tijuana who?
Tijuana bring your momma to a gang bang!

The ladies have their own QOM I believe .

I am DELIGHTED to report that Strava Cycling responded to my request (and probably that of a few others) and changed the name of the Segment in question to something that we can ALL AGREE ON: https://www.strava.com/segments/8715143

Bravo Strava! And, thanks all, for the good discussion. I heard some good arguments for and against and learned more than I ever cared to on the original topic at issue...

^ I wouldn't count on it. Go do a segment search and type in the word "rape". There are more than a few segments that I'm sure would offend someone.

I can understand the OP's opinion. It really was unnecessary to name a segment something like this. Just one more a-hole in the world doing stupid stuff. Let's just hope they become KOM of "I'm here for the gangbang". That sounds like something an a-hole can be really proud of.
I can't imagine most of you don't have facebook...don't 100 random and offensive links scroll by each day?
I'll never look at waffles the same way. Now whenever the fam goes to the diner and my wife emphatically exclaims "oh I'm craving some hot syrup and waffles", I'll have to find an explanation why orange juice spewed out my nostrils.
oh I'm craving hot syrup and a gangbang.

just a few things -

free speech:
free speech comes with the caveat that you sign your name to it, so that you may be judged by your words.
To take an unpopular stance, and hide behind anonymity is cowardice. we have anonymous voting to protect
the minority from majority backlash (punishing the losers, to propagate the winner)
other than words, and the full knowledge of our own imminent demise, there isn't much that separates us from
the animal world. think about it.

modern lexicon:
movie quote or not, if one was to walk into a room with unfamiliar people, this would probably not
be the line used to introduce yourself. to toss it around with your buds, or locker room bs is one thing.
to post in a public place, out of context.....well, that point has already been made.

Proper meaning/etymology:
Think we all got a lesson here.

Kids and sex
Yeah, adults have to talk to their kids about sex. Talking to a 10yo about gangbangs, group sex, etc,
is probably not an age appropriate topic.

So i'll throw out a story about judging something as offensive.
Back in my computer days, we had a lab where the machines were named after greek mythology people/places/things. You
know, homer, iliad, hera, ptolemy, etc.. one of the particularly finicky machines was named gorgon, it was given to that machine
for a reason. Now Medusa was a gorgon. You know, gaze upon her, turn to stone....

well, gorgon is also slang for an ugly girl. and one of the staff members pointed that out. even in context, it was offensive.
some took the stances taken here. toughen up, its only a name, you know its ok because it is.......the response was eerily
the same as here. I know that, it is still offensive.

Moral, if one person feels strongly enough to say something, then others feel that way too. Doing the right thing is not giving in, or
taking the path of least resistance. It isn't the pussification of america, as i've heard so many throw around.

learn the correct context to use these words, so they are effective rather than offensive.

funny you say that - i'm offended that people think god will look better on me if i give an amen to a picture of a cloud that looks like a cross with some sun rays going through it.

Nice, glad it was resolved.
Side note, I personally drew the trails in that map that Strava uses (in your screenshot). I now regret naming the trails Yellow and Orange when I could have named them penispenispenispenis
🙂

lack of creativity.

pen is peni spen isp enis.
