(No Longer) Offensive Strava Segment Name

Whoever thinks that gangbang is just a word that was randomly assigned to some type of sexual act has wool over their eyes. The word is obviously derived from gang rape and whoever came up with it is probably lowest scum of scum of the earth. So yes it is offensive. Try discussing it in a joking (or serious) manner with someone who has actually been gang raped.

That's exactly the disconnect that I was talking about. Neither the men or women thought the two terms gang bang and gang rape were synonymous.

I'd like to believe that no one would make light of the violence and depravity of a gang rape.

I very much doubt that a segment named gang rape would last a hour. The backlash coming from the persons friends alone would cause him/her to agree to delete it.

Anyway it's a movie quote. It was probably @Mountain Bike Mike, he loves terrible movies.

I'm actually offended that you think old school was a terrible movie.

OK. So they mean different things. Does that mean it's less offensive? Less misogynistic?

So. Now you have an environment where you're trying to get more women involved but men start labeling things with terms like "gang bang" and telling women that they're wrong for feeling offended because of some definition specifics?

Awesome job, guys.

^i don't think anyone said.. "You're wrong" and that's unfair to paint us men as the same...
Here, it's just some arguing their view of what gang bang is.

Exactly when i think of gangbang I think of a person willing to take on multiple partners at the same time...not rape

But this thread isn't about the definition of gang bang/rape.

It's about how the OP feels about using these terms as names for strava segments.

I think of some goofy guy showing up at the door to partake in an orgy with someone else's wife.

It's a pop culture reference. They even make at shirt:.

If you don't get the pop culture reference, that's OK. I don't get them all either. But once you get the origin of the term, you can laugh it off, or as is so popular nowadays, you can be offended.

Say you know someone who has been gang raped. Now say that this person is someone close to you. Now say that this person is someone closest to you. Say that person was a minor when this happened. Would you still throw around the term gang bang like it's nothing?

So we're going to hide behind movie quotes? That's pretty poor. I'm going to name a segment about shoving a watch up my ass, aka Pulp Fiction.

I mean this gives me a free pass to quote A Clockwork Orange where they rape women, 'ultraviolent' style.

This isn't really a "we get offended at everything" issue. This is a "men are idiots" issue and if you guys don't understand that, it's some non-zero part of why our sport is a sausage party. Not all of it. But some of it.

When I was a kid there was a Kenny Rogers song about knowing when to hold 'em, fold 'em, etc. Y'all need to figure out that bit about knowing when to fold 'em.

Hint: fold 'em now.

Yes because gang rape and gangbang are different meanings imo

Obviously that's a terrible situation and I wouldn't pretend to understand how a person who went through something traumatic like that would react.

However i doubt the creator of the segment anticipated that because the term is a quote from a movie. A movie which had nothing to do with what you mentioned.

It's a freaking a pop culture reference at this point. Search "I'm here for the gang bang" and see if one result has anything to do with rape.

There's a thin line between avoiding becoming an idiot, and having to wear kid gloves so not to offend anyone. I guess I'm not always sure where things fall with respect to that line.

Clearly it's offensive, I don't really care about getting women or men involved in mountain biking, but come on, can anybody really think most people would like to see this title in a public setting? Any public setting? I'm not on strava, mainly because I'm so slow and my times would be so embarrassing. How much fun would I have explaining to my kids what a gangbang is, maybe I'm a prude?

Again, I could be a prude, but if is not something you'd want to talk to a little kid about, then you shouldn't put it in a spot that's readily available to little kids. That's my line. But before I had kids, I didn't have a line, so maybe I am disingenuous prude? At least as I get older and slower, I get the tinniest amount of wisdom.

In case anyone isn't sure about the origin of the quote ...

With that, I'm out.

What if this person is a parent? Well we have two different points a view , AGAIN!! So it goes round and round.

I'd be interested to see how Strava Would respond to a request for a name change. This is what really matters
