2016 grow grass thread

i will need some tips for new backyard in June, probably the best time to grow grass amirite

Pump track.... Tell the builder to just leave all the dirt piles in place or maybe bake them a cake and they can strategically position the piles making it easier..

Also ask them to leave all the scrap wood for pump track features... Please post pictures and videos when complete...

make it stop!

so i make a pass with the mowing machine, turn around, pass the other way. what is this scalping? seems the deck is way off level.
look around, and realize, i didn't put any 2016 air in the tires. one was looking very sad. pumped it up and all is good. double cut the
front on the diagonal. 5" then 41/2"

Spring blooms coming in nice Pat, the previous owner at my home didn't like plants, since I moved in I've planted over 300 trees, shrubs and perennials. Deers were a real problem till I put up fencing last year, finally plants are coming in like they should

Crab
Unless your first cut spreads crab grass seeds all over the place.
Crabgrass seed is not up yet.

Letting your grass go that long then cutting it violates the 1/3 rule. Never cut more then a third of the grass height. Doing so shocks the grass, which essentially weakens it and allows weeds to take over the lawn.

However Woody has done this repeatedly and has seem to have bred a new variety of turf. Leaves and grass clippings fill in bare spots thus preventing the emergence of weeds.

I find it very liberating to refer to my yard as a 'meadow' rather than a 'lawn'. Takes away all those notions about what is/isn't allowed to grow there, and how tall it should be.

Much to the dismay of my neighbors.

String trimmer technique question

I have a "rise" from the road to the level of my law - it varies from 0' to 2', over approximately 150'
Too steep for riding, and not conducive to push mowing, as it is not flat, and standing above a push mower isn't recommended.

I've been doing it with the string trimmer, but like my head, when i'm done, there are a bunch of bald spots.

the three ways i've been doing it are
- keep the trimmer head horizontal, and work up the hill, this seems easy, but inefficient, as it only works on the uphill stroke
- follow the contour with the trimmer head, working up and down - more efficient, but scalping quite a bit.
- follow contour, walk forward, with rows from the bottom up (simulate push mower) - i have to walk with my back to traffic if
i do this, not ideal. it does seem to work, and i get more exercise.

ideas? didn't see any good videos on 'tube

Is it possible to use a push mower going across the slope?
Using a weed eater is always kinda tricky.

Also you could try flymo.
Google it, it's basically a hover mower that is light, maneuverable and made for uneven ground.

Finally you could consider an alternative ground cover on slope. I like liriope.

could probably knock out 50% with a push mower. then it goes over 45Deg -

flymo! these seems like a DIY......might have to try it

best bet might be a ground cover -

got the sprinklers on and this is all i got

Just pick some of the stuff in the background and toss it all over, problem solved.

How long ago was it seeded, and how much are you watering it?

i think its getting water from le sprinklers every 2 days, probably seeded 4 weeks ago?

when is the water hitting it? like what time of day?

i like to water when the sun is not out. the water stays around longer and the plants get to do their daylight thing without getting wet.

wood water more often. like daily.

in the evening/mornings... i can hear it shooting off the side of the house while im sleeping lol
