You can't remove thatch with a mower. Thatch is located in upper soil profile, you need verticutting blades to remove it. Mowing down grass to lower height will make it easier for seeding. Also with that much area you need a tractor to seed.🙂

Damn that's a day! Have fun laying seed. Do you have an irrigation system?
nope, was one of my first planned upgrades till I found out Amer water charges 1k for a new meter. When I lived at Edison, it was free. I'll probably put one next year for the front only and the veggie garden

I have rake also, painfully slow, I need to get my big mower going again.....
the overseeder has those side cut blades, rented for full day so, will go over once b4 seeding, the overseeder is the same design as their power rake, but adds a hopper to drop seed before the cutting, fun. Weeee

so i'm looking at my strava and i'm thinking, if i use 80% of the cut width per pass
that is 48 inches. 4' * 3.9 miles *5280 ft/mi = 82.363 ft^2 an acre is 43,650 sq^ft
that was 2/3 of an hour - or about 2.8 acres per hour.......damn.

43560 in an acre @fidodie, you're off by 0.2%!!!!

stupid transposition errors...since it was higher, it under estimates the rate, but the time was actually higher, by almost 3%
so that over stated the rate.....but i probably use 90% of the cut width so that ..........😀

where is that embedded spreadsheet option mentioned over in the car thread....

So I don't know if I am sleep walking or not, but this happened overnight. I went to bed with a somewhat normal looking backyard. I only mow it, so it has wild strawberries and crap growing everywhere and tons of weeds - biodiversity maaaaaannnn.

Anyway, I woke up to this (shoe for reference):

WTF did this? Is it the start of a crop circle? I'm sure I have grubs because I literally put nothing down on this part of my lawn. Groundhogs don't work at night, right? Would a raccoon eat grubs?

I think that that would be skunks looking for grubs, but YMMV.

So fall is here and I'm looking to fix the sod that died/burned up over the summer. I've watched videos of fertilizer, compost, seed, raking, is that what im looking at doing here?

close up along the driveway. mostly looks like this where its brown 🙁

The backyard looks more like the surface of the moon than a yard, so that would be another project for another time. the heat has died down so the weed growth has stopped, which is nice.

Why did the sod die, do you have an irrigation system?
You need to seed. If you don't water your grass you need to choose a drought tolerant grass. Check with your local agricultural agent for recommendations of drought tolerant grass varieties. If you go to home Depot and buy generic seed your lawn will look like shit next year.

Once grass starts growing then fertilize it. Growing sod in is tricky. Everyone loves instant lawn that sod provides however it's all top growth with very little roots. When the heat comes sod struggles due to lack of root density. Seeding, while a slower process provides a healthier lawn in the long run.

i think part of the problem is the sod is just throw on top of dirt that has no nutrients in it, its not like new jersey dirt sadly... i think its doing a bad job growing roots on "dirt" which is really just rock/stone...

If the topsoil is really bad you may need to rototill some organic material into the top 4-6" of soil. When contractors backfill soil in developments they skimp on topsoil and use fill, which is basically the dirt under the topsoil. I'm not sure if this is the case, you could get a soil test to see how bad the topsoil is.
If it were me I'd seed the shit out of that lawn with a good variety suited for that area. You'd be amazed in the crappy soil you can grow grass in.

ya, i think im going to get some doper seed and go HAM. i don't think ill bother with the backyard just yet, or maybe i should?

oh heres a photo of the back:

i think its just mostly weeds, nothing quality going on back here. sprayed some vegetation killer on the grassy weed knoll, psyched about that

do i need to aerate the front and back?

@pearl, Aerate and seed the front and back. Your a young man who just bought a house, this is what you do. If you were old and tired like Mitch you would pay some one to do it or buy mums for the front porch and call it a day.
