2024 Olympics

Agreed that Those peacock replays are painful to watch with the 1:1 ratio of commercials to show.
Weird, all i've watched of the Olympics has been Peacock replays on my tv and i have not seen a single commercial. There's actually a lot of dead air and long silent scenic shots between the action. I am stealing Peacock from my SIL so maybe she pays for an upgraded no commercials package?

Yeah that would be the $17 version, something like that. Rest of us got the $8 one.

Damn son, you rich or something?

I also like that the links to all of the replays are intermixed with videos with titles like "So and so wins gold in the vault". There are a million events and you're pretty much forcing spoilers onto anyone who tries to watch a replay. Have this in all of my YouTube TV recordings as well.

Watching women's steeplechase finals rn. Seems like it would be much more interesting as an outdoor course like a Spartan type race. Jumping over a 3 feet barrier into a pool of water would likely break my ankles. Anyone know if trail running was an Olympic sport? 1200px-Sgt._Hillary_Bor_runs_3,000-meter_steeplechase_at_Rio_Olympic_Games_photos_by_Tim_Hipps...jpg

Celebrate early and look like a fool. Her face as she gets passed is priceless

when i first saw that video a few days ago I couldnt figure out why she had a cape. Then I read the story that someone had already handed her a flag to celebrate way before the finish line.

Great lesson on a bit of humility and making sure you finish the job you started.

Couple of notes -
Celebrating before the race is over with a competitor near you is considered unsportsmanlike conduct.
Getting handed something during a race is considered assistance.
Both can lead to a DQ - maybe not at the olympics - but some old fart official at the weekend meet.....

race walk is weird. There is a warning system, then penalty.
if the second place person (at the time) didn't have any warnings, they could break from to speed up in the last couple steps!

Maine and NY are the only two states with a race walk program in the school track system.

Why doesn't NJ have steeplechase?

Steeplechase is such a weird sport. Kind of endurance hurdles with a water feature. Feels like the origins are closer to what "cross country" racing is at this point, which seems like it would be a cool Olympic event. Use the mountain bike courses or the equestrian cross country venue.

I agree, next will be a human dressage event. That's an event I might qualify...

Still not as weird as modern pentathlon. Fencing, running, shooting, swimming, and riding a random horse. How is this still a thing?

at least these things can be scored - the hobby horse thing is pure pageant.

I mean, yes. But also:

"The modern pentathlon is scored with two separate rounds.

The first combines points scored in the racing, swimming and fencing events.

For fencing, athletes will earn points for winning bouts that take place within the second round of that event. Points for the racing and swimming events will be accumulated based on each athlete's performance in the event.

The points scored by each athlete in the first round, also called the semi-final round, are used to determine their placement at the start of the second round, which comprises of the running and shooting event.

Only 18 of the 36 athletes who compete in the semi-finals for both the men's and women's competitions will move on to the final round.

Athletes will have a handicap of one second for every point they scored in the first round. The first athlete starts with zero on the clock, and then the athlete with the second-most points from the first round starts at zero plus the number of seconds difference and so on.

The first athlete to cross the finish line at the final round wins the gold medal."

Really splitting hairs over which is the silliest.
