any baseball fans?

the only even close second is any team from philly.

Well at least we agree on something. Sheff to the Mets is kinda interesting in a "hey look you can see Joe Thiesman's bone sticking out of there" way, but he just wants his 500th then I imagine he'll finally self-destruct and retire. Wouldn't it help the Mets more to let him to to Philly?

Agree with 100% on that norm. Sheff is washed up and why the mets picked him up really is beyond me.

I'm not a die hard baseball guy anyway. The only ball I watch is when the red sox are on. Otherwise I'd rather watch curling. Or read.

My philly sports hatred comes from college. It seemed like everyone I knew was from philly amd all I heard for four years was eagles this, phillies that, why do the sixers suck, when are the flyers going to do anything. Ugh. Brutal.

well since its a baseball thread...And I am a Die Hard fane ill talk some baseball... 😀😀😀😀

The biggest difference bertween the 08 Yankees and the 09 Yankees is obviously pitching depth. CC and the donger (Wang) get lit up as your 1 and 2, but than Burnett and Pettitte both drop Gems. If the 1 and 2 got lit up last year that meant a 5 game losing streak. I have high hopes for these Yankees...

And the Mets.. can you get a freaking hit with RISP? They left like 15 men on base night. On the bright side, Maine didnt embarrass himself which I thought was gonna happen. Damn Marlins are starting off the season hot...

Using Ye Olde Search Feature I found a thread about baseball. Was going to consider starting one but I'll scrape this up.

A few weeks ago when I was out in Ohio I took Julia to a Reds game. I really enjoyed it, and as it was the Reds we got like 7th row seats on the 3rd base line for $20 or something like that. Very reasonable.

Since then I've been watching the random games that Prime puts on for free. And yesterday I found out that you can watch 1 free game a day on MLB.com. It's a random game. So you get what you get. Yesterday I watched the Yankees almost blow a 4-0 lead in the 9th against the Tigers on Prime, while watching the Pirates beat the Cards in 13. Both during work on 2 different laptops. I didn't get a lot of work done late afternoon.

I used to be a big fan when I was a kid. Huge baseball card collection. And I followed the game. After college I tried to like it again but I was easily bored and rarely got past 1 week into the season. Now that I'm old, I find these random games really enjoyable. Obviously the start of the season is a lot better as every team still has hope. I mean, except the White Sox. They are pretty much DOA already.

Today's free game is the Angels at the Rays. If this were July, it would probably be as interesting as watching paint dry, just less colorful. But right now I find it enjoyable.

I also have this desire to visit every stadium in the majors. To this point, I've been to 6 I think. Maybe 7. I honestly cannot remember if we went to a Toronto game many moons ago. Of course, some of those stadiums don't exist anymore. Shea. Veteran's Stadium. The Tigers old ballpark. But they count.

I think this is maybe my mental response to the politics going on right now. I think some people get old and obsess about politics. This seems like a dreadful way to spend the last years of your life. Baseball seems much more relaxing.

Anyway, the free game is at 1:10 today.

maybe you can answer this since you are sort of a different generation than me, but i feel like sports was HUGE when I was 10-18 or so, like you knew what was going on in every sport that was happening, but now, with how hard it is to watch them, im not as interested in it. like i could name most of the rangers/devils line up from 1996, but now? who knows.

My much younger cousin has completed all the stadiums in his 20s and early 30s made easier as he was a Jet Blue steward. He grew up in San Jose so die hard Giants fan. His dad my Uncle got to triple A angles/Oakland before injury took him out back in the 70s. That same uncle took me to '69 Mets playoff game, I was 5 and remember nothing except my Dad picking us up at local precinct. Our car was on blocks and the wheels were stolen off the car 🙂

I don't watch games as we don't have live TV, but I do love listening to radio play by play. Something very nostalgic about it, and love Howie Rose calling the game.

I mean, well, what's the question?

Yeah, to your exact point, in 1996 I knew that Tie Domi was 1 of the wings on the 3rd team/goon squad. Adam Graves was the center of the 2nd line, and so on. Leech & Bookeboom, however you spell his name. For sure there was a time when I knew lineups from random teams and whatnot.

Wait, in 1996 weren't you like 2 years old? Have you aged since I last saw you? In my head you & Fred are like 15 years old.

Anyway, what's the question?

I've been to 22 so far. 18 active, 4 defunct. Still missing the California and Texas parks mostly...then Colorado which is just a trip of it's own really.

I've never cared to do NHL or NFL stadiums, they're far less personalized and interesting. We've done almost all of them via road trips in our 20's...now all the other guys have kids so they're on indefinite hiatus.

Living in Charlotte will do that. I'm a Rays fan, but without seeing them live I feel less connection so I do catch them when they're playing the Yankees/Mets. I try to get to at least 10-15 Devil games a year, it keeps you far more invested IMO.

Wouldn't say I'm a "fan" - my dad and grandfather as well as hubby are Yankees fans. So I am too. I now understand more of the game and do enjoy it.

Hubby has goal of hitting all of the stadiums. We've checked off a bunch already. My favorites have been Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. This summer we're hitting Detroit.

We will hit the Patriots or Thunders since tickets are cheap and stadiums are close.

Yeah, I made a Google map of the stadiums and the CA/TX ones definitely jump out, plus the 1-offs like Colorado and Seattle. The idea is to do these stadiums as part of other trips. I can't base a trip around baseball. I enjoy it enough. But not enough to base a CA trip around it.

im going to have to bring my collection to @Norm s house one night

For whatever reason....Kieth Hernandez was the first baseball card I ever got when I was a kid...no idea why, but I have a bunch of them

When I was a kid, my Aunt worked for At&t and then Nynex....they had seasons tickets to the mets games...So I used to go to Shea quite a bit.

I have a box of cards in my office. The "valuable" ones that were said to be worth garbage in like 1991 because there were 55 million of every card. Anyway, I collected them back then.

I do wonder if these cards are worth anything to anyone today. Like Bonds & McGuire rookie cards. Griffey Jr, etc. I think the Wade Boggs & Cal Ripken's are likely worth something. But if you look online it is a cesspool of people trying to rob unsuspecting suckers out there. There's a Donruss Griffey rookie card I have that is an "error" I saw on Ebay for $13k. Then you see the same thing elsewhere for like $50. I mean, $50 would be great. $13k would be even better lol.

I'm actually surprised this hasn't already happened. I can totally picture you bringing over your baseball cards and G.I. Joe aircraft carrier for a sleepover.

I only go to 1 or 2 yankee games a year because getting to Yankee stadium is a pain the ass. The 60 Miles to the GWB is 55 minutes. The 3 miles from GWB to Yankee Stadium is 2 hours if you get stuck. And its not like your hanging around yankee stadium for anything else other than a contact high from all the weed smoke.

My older son plays on his middle school team and a club team so baseball is part of our lives almost every day which I love. He's also a huge Yankee fan and will just hang out and watch 9 innings of their mediocre pitching and striking out 15 times. But that one 485 foot Judge HR makes it all worth it!

This made me legit LOL. We may need to do this and dress up in matching Yankees pajamas.

I've been trying to figure this out. Compare this to the Reds game we went to. We started in Columbus at 11:45, drove over 100 miles, paid $20 to park, watched the whole game, and drove another 100 miles back to Columbus and we were back by 6:00. The same trip from my house would be 8 hours to Yankee Stadium and would cost like $150 in tolls and parking.

You can get like $5 tickets on StubHub. It's not the ticket price. But getting in & out of the stadium is a drag.

Many, many moons ago a bunch of us took the subway to the old stadium. This is a mistake you make once. And you don't realize this mistake until 10:30 at night when 20,000 people are trying to get on the subway. I think it took us almost 3 hours to get back to New Brunswick using only mass transit. It's not even a joke to say that riding a bike would have been faster, and I am sure we were all drunk AF at the time.

yankees are easy compared to the Mets......

i'm hitting white Sox, twins, brewers in May - that will leave TX, OH, Atlanta, and Seattle for me. I missed the OH trip with COVID.
Not sure I've gotten to the Marlins new stadium.

Just gotta take the train to Citi Field. So much easier.

Exactly, graves, leech, richter, how we remember this and the newer generations of players are just meh?

I can race 40+ next year btw.

I don't think it's that. But I think players hop teams more often than they used to. I turn on a Yankees game and its like half the people came over in FA in the offseason. I think it used to be the case that people stayed on the same team for longer. But that may just be that I pay less attention than I used to. Maybe the players now have a shorter career length? IDK.

Ok chatGPT agrees with me:

"The average career length of a Major League Baseball (MLB) player has decreased over time. A 2007 study found that position players had an average career of 5.6 years, with one in five having only a single-year career. However, more recent data indicates that the average MLB career has dropped to under three years overall, with pitchers averaging below 2.7 years. This decline is partly due to an increase in pitching injuries, leading to more frequent elbow and shoulder surgeries in the 2020s. Additionally, less than 10% of players have careers lasting a decade or longer."
